Hi all
I'm in a bit of a dilemma here and I should have asked the PH massive for advice a while ago. Better late than never though so here goes

My wife and I are expecting our first child early in the new year. I also recently changed job and am due to start at the new place in a couple of months but the commute goes up from the current 8 miles one way to around 90 miles.

Priorities are Reliability and MPG at the very top and an estate.

I'd like to keep the car for 2 years atleast because in the last 10 years I've averaged 2 car changes a year and frankly I'm tired of it now.

In the next 24 months I'm looking to do around 35k miles give or take. My current 4.2 V8 petrol will not cut it unfortunately!

Budget: £11,500
Year: Not older than 2014 to make reselling easier in 2 years time
Fuel: Diesel
Car Type: Estate
Trans: Prefer Manual but Auto is OK if the impact on Fuel Economy is not too bad

Given the priorities, I'm thinking of going down the Approved Used route for peace of mind. I've done some research and this is what I've found.
BMW: Mostly out of budget, poor spec
Merc: As above
VW: Passat In budget, good spec but I'm worried about what the 'fixes' to the Emissions scandal have done to reliability. Approved Used provides 2 years Warranty though
Skoda: Surprisingly expensive, more so than VW, not sure if this is due to said emissions issue forcing VW to drop prices to attract the punters
Seat: The design is not really appealing to me to be honest
Ford: Mechanically sound but have a Fisher Price feel about them that I cannot get on with, plus poor residuals
Audi: Totally out of Budget
Volvo: Not checked yet
Lexus: Not checked but I'm told Toyota diesels are not great
Toyota: As Lexus
Honda: As Lexus

Have I missed anything? Is Approved Used a good idea in my situation?

All help gratefully received.

a colleague went through the exact same scenario last year and bought a 62 plate Skoda Octavia.

He seems extremely happy with it and is always going on about how it's the perfect commuter/baby paraphernalia wagon. Still a reasonably fun drive as well apparently.

Might be worth looking at PCH on this (check out Simpsons) as they seem to have some decent offers on new cars at the moment,
