They were like that about 1 week after leaving the factory.

That seems to be about the time when Man Utd fans were the worst-behaved hooligans in the country, worse even than Leeds. Their visit to my Carrow Road was met with trepidation - they somehow managed to all get into "our" Barclay Stand and much fisticuffs would follow. More often than not, some would get onto the roof of the stand, rip off sheets of roofing material and throw it down on our heads. Not quite the same as the prawn-sandwich munchers of today.

Nearly enough tartan to mistake it for a Bay City Rollers concert...

Lots of thumbs-up OK badges and graffiti with 'cool cat' - seems so quaint now.

Worn down shoes etc - clothing was much more expensive back then.

It's pics like these that convinced me never to get a tattoo. Because what looks cool at any given point in time often looks ridiculous a few years later.

You've hit one of my pet peeves. It's just a fashion. It'll go "out of date", and then what? You can dump clothes and shoes, you can restyle your hair, but laser deletion? Really? They'll all look like they've had third-degree burns.

Don't get me wrong, it's a free country and all that, but people are going to point and laugh in 30 years time. Mark my words.

iirc, The Cool Cats were the original City "firm", before the Guvnors and Young Guvnors.

What an amazing set of photos. Manchester really was a st hole in the seventies.

Not sure credit cards were available then! I can remember the ads for Access ("your flexible friend!") in the late '70s and nobody i knew had one.

Completely agree. The thing with tattoos is that they are to all intents and purposes a permanent disfiguration.
I mean teddy boys from the 50's could grow out their DA's (Duck's asses) and become bank managers. 70's punks with pink, spikey mohican hair cuts could grow them out when they became MP's. But having a purple splodge (all tattoos become purple splodges in time) up the face & neck........
The Manchester United link is of course pertinent to tattoos. Personally I blame David P(B)eckham for the (popular) spread of tatts. - And it's for this reason (alone) that he deserves NEVER to be knighted.....

Ref another link to Man U. in the 70's remember the football hooliganism episode 'Life on Mars' (series 1 ep. 5.)? I think the production company must have used Ian S.P. Reid's photos as a template: the costume/location department(s) got the grungy look of the 70's just right.

As for myself, I was a Liverpool fan in the 70's. And I'm sure we didn't look such a bunch of wallies.*

  • P.S. Unfortunately I can't work out how to post a photo of myself in my 70's Liverpool supporter's gear - so you'll have to take my word that we (Liverpool fans) were dressed in a timeless, classic style - the very epitome of sartorial elegance!!!!!!!!!!!!

To paraphrase an old football fan site 'Whilst we condemn the violence of the period, we can't help admiring the aim.'

At least we used to polish our Dr. Martin boots before we went to the match , not like the scruffs on these photos.

I vividly remember watching a documentary in the late 70's (76 - 78) on the Millwall fans. Footage of 'Harry the Dog' running down the side of the pitch towards the West Ham fans and launching himself into the crowd with fists flailing was an all time low point in footie history (maybe not for F Troop members who probably think it was, er, 'classic'.). The middle level of football hooliganism at the club, if memory serves me well, was 'Treatment'. They had made it to the middle echelons and had to prove themselves to be even considered for F Troop. I forget the name of the entry level hooligans but there will probably be a fan along to enlighten me. I was both horrified and yet transfixed on what was being shown. It seemed to me (I was a rugby player, so never really experienced violence on or off the pitch) to be like organised warfare and the football was just the catalyst, or venue, for the shenanigans.

Oi vey!

1966 is when the Barclaycard appeared. It's why everyone remembered that date, surely? biggrin
