Evening all

Caught doing 82MPH on a deserted Sunday night on the M5 between 17 & 16 northbound.

Lesson learnt I thought these were only active when speed was set lower or would have had more tolerance than the standard when no traffic is on the motorway.

Now this offence was April, I received the letter today due to it being a co car, Is there a way to change the course location? I'm in Birmingham and don't really want to trek down to Avon and Somersets patch to do the course if i can help it?

Thanks

For what it's worth you have my sympathy but you should be able to choose a venue to suit you if offered a SAC.

However, are you saying you were caught by a camera on a motorway gantry when there was no temporary limit in force? If so that's proof positive these devices are being used to enforce the NSL (or at least they are in some locations); seems like Big Brother really is watching us......

Agree that it's hardly crime of the century and sympathise with OP. But I don't see how gantry cameras in a VSL area being used for NSL is any more Big Brother than any other speed camera? The most surprising thing is that people expect them not to be used for NSL - it's not as if a lack of gantry signs means there's no speed limit...

Yes it was blank and stating no temp speed limit, of the 4 photos 1 is showing the gantry in darkness stating the time it was last showing a temporary speed, in this example over an hour since it showed a limit.

Picture shows my car in lane 4 with 1 car in lane 3, no other cars in sight.

I think other types of camera are much more visible and when smart motorways with gantry cameras were introduced there was a suggestion those cameras were there only to enforce temporary speed limits as and when they were in use. It's going back a while but I'm sure there were people on this very forum who got all defensive about the notion of them being used to enforce the NSL (it'll never happen, where's your evidence it's happening, etc) but personally I always thought it inevitable that their use would be extended to enforcing the NSL and hey presto that's exactly where we appear to be.

However, I don't recall this shift in policy being terribly well publicised and perhaps the motoring public would have a different view of the 70mph limit on motorways if they thought it was going to be enforced more rigorously. Most people probably aren't too bothered about the 70mph limit if there's no great push to enforce it but if NIP's start to be issued via these cameras for doing less than 80mph perhaps that might change?

A poor suggestion then

The overhead cameras in/on the gantry enforce temporary speed limits.
The yellow ones on the left of the carriage way (pair of yellow boxes) enforce everything.
This is the new SMART (Sly) motorway system.

It certainly wasn't too difficult to see it was the thin end of a wedge; exactly the same as cameras only being used in accident blackspots whereas that's now clearly no longer the case. The reality is the use of technology is being extended in order to potentially catch people speeding anytime, anywhere; obviously there are some who welcome that but equally I'm sure there's many of the motoring population who don't...

I think you might be being done for sitting in L4 when 1 and 2 were clear... stupid is as stupid does

The OP's had a NIP for speeding and an invitation to attend a SAC so his lane discipline clearly wasn't the issue. However, in terms of the latter point, perhaps he was just overtaking the car in lane 3 (rather than undertaking it illegally) and if so what's wrong with that? Fair question as to what the car in lane 3 was doing sitting there if there was nothing in lanes 1 and 2 but that's hardly the OP's fault or stupidity!

FFS i was being facetious.
Although being a paid up member of PH he should realise that L1 is the correct lane to be in

The picture does make my lane dicipline look poor, but I was doing a 1 to 4 to make a point if I recall the night.

Camera was one that is shown above, light flashed from above but picture is of all lanes from the side of the road.

Yes you can do the course locally to avoid points, and that will mean you need to keep 3 clean years, otherwise next time you will have to take the course. The course is OK-ish. A word of caution, do not take a phone in. You will be advised to switch it off. A woman on my course was texting, seen by the instructor, and threatened to be sent out from the course and fail it. She was cacking her drawers!

Another word of caution, Don't be late!
2 people on mine were 5/10 mins late and were not allowed in, and told to rebook at their cost for another day.
