Took the Chim for its first proper run since Combe today, and after an hour or so of pootling around it suddenly developed a loud chirping noise from the front right corner. I checked for budgies but couldn't find any so scarily I think it must be mechanical. It was occurring regularly with every rotation of the wheel, except when I was braking when it became constant. The brake pedal was also pretty soft all day, it felt a little as though it was getting worse once the chirping started though I think that may be my brain playing tricks. I'm hoping this is just due to me boiling some fluid at Combe, of course being an idiot I didn't check the fluid level when I had the chance banghead

I'm going to get the wheel off and have a poke around tomorrow morning but to be honest I'm not too sure what to look for. Anybody got any suggestions? Gutted as I had big plans for the car tomorrow frown

Pads worn out from trackday. Disc warped. Wheel bearing collapsed. There's not much in that area so look for the obvious. When you jack the car up try and move front wheel and feel for free play. Hold hands 12/6 o'clock and 9 and 3 o'clock to check for wheel bearing or ball joint play.

Wheel bearing was my fear Alun frown gah feck!

Pads are still fairly meaty, obviously I wasn't braking much on the track day! biggrin

Any identifiers for the wheel bearing other than checking for play?

Gritty feeling when spinning wheel. Or free play from test above. And your sure it's not sticky pads from loads of brake dust ( trackday). You must have slowed down to pit hehe

There are little retaining springs on the back of the pads. I had that chirping every revolution except when braking when the springs were catching on the disk for some reason.

Do you have rose jointed droplinks? If yes, check they aren't running dry, this happened to me, took ages before I found it lol

Also the pads may look good like there is plenty of pad left on them but they can left off their steel backing and cause this symptom (only I think when mine did it the squeeking stopped when braking?) still worth investigating don't want one of them spitting out when you need it most.

I had a chirping sound a few weeks ago. Wheel bearing grease seal had broken up and got mashed in the bearing. New bearing and seals problem solved.

Cheers for the advice fellas. I'm fairly confident that it's not the bearing as there's no play in the wheel and the hub rotates nicely when free of the caliper. I couldn't physically see anything wrong with the brake assembly but the nasty noises continued after I'd put it back together and took the car out and when I brake it sounds as though I've got no pads, even though they appear to be in decent shape. I'm gonna take the car off to someone more clever than me in the week to see what they make of it biggrin

It has got me mulling over that brake upgrade I'd forgotten I wanted.. scratchchin

Mine was one of the springs on the back of the pad - it had slipped off the edge of the pad and was just touching the disk.
