I need a car. I don't want to spend too much, but would like a reasonable amount of power, and good handling. Trawling classifieds, a number of things pop up, but my knowledge of these more modern cars is rather thin. Insurance is an issue after an endorsement on my licence, making things a bit more costly.

Fiesta ST MK 6 - good on insurance, affordable, like the looks and never had a Ford. Were reviewed well in their day. This is really what is appealing to me the most right now.
Obvious Renault choices (RS Models) too spendy on insurance, also maintenance quite costly.
Some interesting saloons (SAAB turbos, Vauxhalls with V6, X-Type) mucho to insure.
Looked at panda 100hp, is that a good bet?
Polo Gti? Seems a bit weedy.
Colt CZT is appealing, but I am 6'5 and a dinky car like that seems a bit wrong.
Same for Micra SR.
Mini Coopers/S - Fair, but I am not mad on the styling. Do love the supercharger though.
325ti Compact - too much to insure.
330i - too much to insure.
Would like another 306 but I can't find a good one.

If anyone has any ideas I have not thought of, I would be keen on hearing them, or any insight into ownership of the above - most are feasible, just how much I have to gimp my wallet.
Thanks.

Sleeper rather than hot hatch mania? May be no slower & cheaper to insure.

What about a Volvo C30 in 2.4i or 2.5T form they should be cheaper to insure, obviously a rough idea of budget would help.

With the Fiesta just check you fit, we are similar heights and you sit quite high in the Fiesta, but they are quite fun to drive. Is the Mk7 Zetec S out of reach ?

I've had an ST150 - nice cars, I eventually got rid of mine for another MX-5. Other options that aren't on your list:

Toyota Corolla T-Sport or a Celica. The supercharged version of the Corolla is rare but has around 215bhp if my memory serves me correctly.

Honda Civic Type R - but this could be tricky to insure.

Volvo C30 T5 - basically a Focus ST in a nicer body. I've got one at the moment with a Polestar map, excellent in a straight line but they need suspension work to be made to handle well.

Corsa VXR (not a fan personally but might be your thing).
