Exhaust bracket
Discussion
Sorry no pics, I forgot to take them and the cars back on it's wheels now.
I'm was replacing a split exhaust hanger and notice a bracket upstream of the cat has cracked and needs welding back onto the pipe. The cracks are only just visible, but if you shove the pipe it opens up, it's a sort of U section so would need welding above and below. It'll be a while before I can get the cat off for welding, the bottom part of the bracket is easy enough but awkward for a welder to get to the top part insitu.
The cat has a 2 into 1 into 2 arrangement. The bracket is on one of the pipes upstream of the cat, not much clearance between the pipes so I can't get a traditional U type exhaust clamp between the 2. I think I may be able to feed a couple of worm drive clips around as a temporary repair.
Would this be strong enough? And pass an MOT?

It is liable to be strong enough to last a while until you can repair properly alas whether it is likely to be gas tight enough to pass an mot like that may be another question.
maybe with the help of some gun-gum or repair bandage you might be ok.
It doesn't have to gas tight, it just holds a bracket onto the side of the pipe. Doesn't even provide much support, At a guess it just stops a bit of sideways movement.maybe with the help of some gun-gum or repair bandage you might be ok.
Odd that bit isn't on vibration mounts as far as I can tell, that bracket's mounted solid onto the body.
Sorry, my bad. I know you mentioned bracket, but when you started talking about crack, I assumed you meant the pipe was cracked at the bracket.
FYI, I have just made up some additional supports for my exhaust and they were made of what is basically large/long make it yourself jubilee clip type stuff (similar to that used by local councils when fitting signs on posts) with made up legs to exhaust mounts & they are stronger than the ones that came with the exhaust, with the added benefit of being infinitely adjustable in position.

You mentioned a U bolt clamp would not fit. There are very thin exhaust clamps available - you aren't limited to the cheap and nasty bent threaded rod. Look at Mikalor Supra for an example. Perhaps you can find space for a clamp after all. If not, a long hose clamp round the whole thing would certainly be enough to hold the weight of a typical exhaust, but you won't get much tension on it and you may find that things flap around and works loose over time.

Thanks those Mikalor clamps look like they may do it, I'll see what's available locally. (probably Halfords

Any decent motor factors should have something similar in stock. Obviously Halfwits doesn't fall into that category!

I have tried the Mikalor ones before & found them to be cr@p, the problem is if you need good torque/tension the pivots aren't solid circles, so they get stuck, dig in & shear the band round them.
Those ones you show do look like the pivots are full circle, so should be better.
I haven't bought these for years (that's how durable they were) and the ones I bought were fine. Are they cutting corners these days? Those ones you show do look like the pivots are full circle, so should be better.

I have used similar ones before which were much better but couldn't find the same brand when I tried the Mikalor ones.
