Rationalizing fleet
Discussion
Hi All, long term lurking from me. And before I go on too much further let me say I know this is a very first world problem... but one which all pistonheads I'm sure need to consider. Work hard play hard! Also I can't spell 😐
Been running 996turbo for 7 years, 58k miles. Pleased with it but not so attached as to never consider selling. It really is a good tool for all situations. Sort of need something from Stuttgart in my life though.
Currently also running a Clio 200 cup plus recaros, camber, r888r, etc. This is my track car that I'm most pleased with having visited a good number of varied circuits. Following on from a Clio trophy it's lived up well. Again not saying never sell but it's a good value point - if you bin it it would be a bad day but maybe not terminal on track. Selling would always mean loosing cost of mods etc.
Run a t6 combi 4motio van for family duties, 2 kids plus retriever. It's great and awesome for mountain bikes etc. Not selling. This replaced an e39 m5 - was a very sad day.
Her car - vw toerag - 100k miles - altitude kit etc but has been absolutely trashed by kids dog wife. Needs replacing within 18months - I think it's quite tired mechanically - just a hunch.
So I have 3 covered spaces and plenty of other drive space.
What to do next? I'm a proper signed up petrol head but hey as adictions go it's not that bad...
I'm thinking take up my last free covered space with a convertible? Mx5 turbo? Westfield? Or something pretty alpha spider? E30 cab? Mr2 mk1?I.e. 10k max budget. Or go a bit mad price wise and stretch to 2 eleven lotus or faster caterham. (On the mortgage!?)
How do people rationalize their fleets? Like the car journalists do. A car for each occasion? Hence the convertible? (Had mx5 in past)
I commute by train and the wife works from home. I can't really spanner myself bar the very basics. I am aware of the perils of lots of tax and insurance costs. So what would you do? Mixing track needs with family etc?
Some ideas - land crusier for mrs? And a convertible?
Sell 996t since values are up ish and ? Ultima? Exige? Cayman?
R26r soft spot. Impreza ra also. Or A classic?
Anyway rather than have this conversation repeatedly with myself or my limited number of petrolhead friends I thought it might be fun to get people's input?
Thanks anyway
George

Hi George here's what I'd do:
Sell the wife's car replace with another of that ilk (whatever one she like best that you're happy with) then work on the convertible if you want a sporty drop top then I'd get the best S2000 you can find.

Interesting- father in law loves s2000. Love them in yellow. But is it interesting enough for 'weekend' type car? No doubt the s2000 are likely to appreciate.
Should appreciate if you do few miles and get a good example, absolutely excellent engine, few naturally aspirated engines like it at this price point nowadays. Or what about a VXR220 (not sure you'd get one in budget), or even a Caterham?
Yes I'm more tempted by vx / lotus or more extreme Westfield / Caterham. Mr2 / mx5 not off the radar either...
I guess I'm also interested in how these complement my other cars - or might it be more sensible (!) to try and work with cars that can be used with the family. Four seats etc. Turbo and Clio are already used mostly alone.
But the draw of something raw is strong - balanced with chores of mot / tax / services cycles admin etc

Is the raw aspect not covered by the tack Clio.
What about a Maserati QP? Nice 4 seater for use with the family for a 'special' car or a Bentley Arnage / early FlyingSpur?
Completely different from what you already have!
Or sell the clip and replace with a Caterham / Lotus for track / convertible box ticked in one and supplement with mega-luxo-plutocrat barge (if blowing the budget do it in Style).

Just love those frenchies though - hot hatch reminds me of being young. But your right many people have said Clio 200 is a bit half way house...
Temptation might be to buy the wife something a dash smarter and make her use my van more for trashing. Which kind of gets me into the luxo barge and still gives me room for a convertible. But I guess luxo would be limited - i.e. 5 series
I do like the idea of blowing the budget but if I did I think it would be for something with very strong residuals - hence the 2 eleven reference...
