Probably takes at least 15 mins to get all that oil hot...........

Just means more frequent oil changes.............

Shouldn't be an issue as long as oil has got up to temp. Have done a similar journey for 20+ years in a number of 911s & Boxsters. Currently have a 997.1 turbo - gets up to oil temp by the time I get work/home.

You won't get a 997.1 up to full oil temp in 5 miles. At speeds of 50-60 MPH my old 997.1 (C2S) was 7 miles + on my 20 mile commute to work. The water temp will be there or there abouts, but you won't reach the magic 80 degrees oil temp unless it's roasting hot and even then I doubt it.

Whether that would ultimately be a long term wear issue I don't know, but I suspect given the relatively fragile nature of the 997.1, it probably won't help matters and will only add to your sleepless nights!!

it's not an oil temp issue really although with a new car it will coke up to hell on dfi cars which should run at 105

it's more a condensation issue where your cars rots away from the inside out.

mini's hate short runs and need a walnut decoke often lol

If you own a N14 Generation 2 Cooper S or JCW MINI, it’s likely your R56 will be suffering from a build up of carbon around the valves and intake ports. It’s not anything you can avoid, unfortunately, due to the second gen MINIs using direct injection for improved performance and fuel economy. But if you don’t take steps to minimise the impact of coking, your MINI can suffer all manner of issues.

I use Vpower as a cleaning fuel 100% on all my cars I swear by Vpower in a car with DFi and any turbo based cars..

But direct injection does not spray into the intake so the cleansing effect of the fuel cannot access the back of the inlet valve. Design mitigates the effects in some engines...........................

R56 2012 Cooper s, running it 4 years and seems fine with only 20k. It does get spanked daily, and certainly up to temp most days.

Would you mind explaining this in a bit more detail please. Genuine query, not looking to troll.

Journey like this demands either an electric car, or something small and fun that you can chuck about a bit & not care about like an £8k Abarth 500 or even better a nice £1.5k Ford StreetKA or Dahatsu Copen. Then get the 997 anyway for weekends.

In the winter the 997 is a pig for a journey like that, you have to fully defrost it or the windows don't go up again when you open the door and they get stuck on the outside of the door. My station is only 1.5 miles & I did this for a bit and it wasn't the right tool for the job. Heated seats and heater don't get up to temp in that time.

Double check today-on a warm 'summer's day-17 mins to reach 80 degrees oil. Optimum 100/105 takes 23 minutes. Minimum of 30 minutes driving for mine.

I ran a 997.1 C4S from new for 8 years, with a daily home-station commute of around 7 miles, without any problems.

Well maybe not so much actual rotting, but moisture builds up in the crankcase and never burns off because the engines just not running for long enough (see earlier comments about oil getting up to 100deg - even at this time of year my C2s takes at least 15 minutes)
This results in increased wear in the engine as the oil is effectively contaminated. Short journeys are also what cause yellow gunk build up in the oil filler cap - also not good as over time this seeps into the oil breather system and buggers up the Air / Oil Seperator. Another thing to consider is decreased battery life as it never recovers from starting the car and running all that electircal gizmodo.

I think the OP is wise to keep the Mini and buy a 997, as it'll be better appreciated on a nice early am weekend blast biggrin

most other things rot esp manifolds and exhaust systems far faster than you would ever think possible.

I don't see the point ina 997 for weekend use only either it's not special a car for the weekends and who really goes out every weekend to drive these days the roads are full.

buy a Lotus/Boxster, Ducatti or some thing fun and keep the mini imo.

Hmm. My exhaust certianly doesn't look very healthy but it's holding up very well. The silencers are SS from the factory and are solid-as. Nowt wrong with the rest of the car aside from the Tandem Pump being a bit scabby but I tidied that up recently anyway.
Nothing wrong with having a 997 for weekend only use, and if it's the car you've always promised yourself it will feel special. if it doesn't you're not doing it right.

2007 997.1 C4 with 50k - My commute is 7.6 miles, of which there is 4 miles in the middle on an empty dual carriageway.

On the dual carriageway I cruise at 70-75mph on the clock and the rpm never goes above 3k, the oil temp is fully warmed up at 90 when i pull into the train carpark, if it was all in the town/A roads i should imagine it would need a few more miles..

I do this June/July/Aug.... for the other 9 months of the year i commute in the dark & rain/snow in a 2009 Fiat 500 Popular Plus , whose oil hits operating temperature in about 1 mile.. !
