BMW 130i

3 litre N/A straight-six in a compact-ish car. Engine is super reliable and costs buttons to run. Had mine 5 years, and have no idea what I'd change it to if I had to for similar money.

insurance depends on your driving history, area, ncb and is all individual. Whats good for me could be shocking for you and visa versa so its irrelevant

I don't know whether you can find a good example in your budget, but I would vote for anything from an MX-5, Clio Trophy, Integra, MR2 or Impreza STI.

Megane RS230 F1 R26 is the one to go for they're the best handling but a little fragile at times, the most common issues aren't deal breakers but the cost of window regulators is a joke.

Or you could go for the Focus ST they're more robust than the Megane but they're not quite as sharp, the liner issues only affect cars running big boost, the intercooler is to small so on hot days they suffer, but they have that cracking 5 pot engine I really enjoyed mine.

Focus ST-3

MX5 and plenty of change.

Civic Type R and some change.

MR2 and plenty of change.

Any other requirements?

That budget would run to a good 944 lux which would fit the bill well.

Bonus points would be little or no depreciation, the joy of a classic and pop-up headlights.

There are no real massive issues with either but on the Renault as I said the window regulators are expensive & the cambelt change isn't cheap, on the Ford the liner issue but that only affects high boost cars so buy on condition with both cars.

And their MPG is worse than a 40 tonnes truck :-)

OP, how about a Clio Sport?

Get a decent one with sensible mileage within your budget.

Your average 40 ton truck will get 9 mpg so none of these are real drinkers in comparison wink , the Focus will be the thirstiest but not what I'd call over the top remember it has five cylinders to feed.

Clio RS 34.4 avg
Megane RS 33.2 avg
Focus ST 30.4 avg

Also don't be fooled by any VAG figures as they're always for the DSG cars, the manuals are 2-3mpg worse but that still means a GTI will be around 33 mpg.

Yes, with reasonable performance and a chassis that's better than 99% of anything else on the road.

You'll need to find a good one and look after it but that's not impossible.

You can get MK2 Leon Cupras from 5k now, a simple remap gets you 300bhp and reliable as you like

Sorry but suggesting to someone with a 5k budget asking for a reliable, cheap to run daily a thirty year old Porsche is laughable.

Not an oddball choice at all, but a Mk5 Golf GTI is a great all-rounder.

Really? Been watching these but can't see a 265bhp 3.0 litre BMW doing more than 20 mpg...
