Out of the two which would you pick? Or what else would you pick instead? Budget max £4000. No hatchbacks, Must be stylish, must do 40mpg+ (So likely needs to be a diesel but isn't a requirement if you can think of something). Performance doesn't matter too much but preferably decent acceleration for overtaking. I know the two I suggested fall into different price brackets but I don't mind the price as long as it's 4k or less.

Thankyou,
Gloria.

Think the 2.4 diesel isn't meant to be most economical.

Honest Johns real world MPG says 34.5mpg

GT 1.9 diesel - 44.2mpg

I had a GT for 1,5 years, loved it smile

I had the same options, between the Pegeuot and the Alfa, went with the Alfa.

I can only recommend you to do the same. The JTD engine is a good one as far as I know.

I would say the Alfa is the better one out of the two they do seem to wear front bushes out rather quickly though

My alternative is one of these:

CLK270 cdi I couldn't fault mine when I had it I used to see high 40's on (mine was mapped) the motorway when sitting between 70-80mph around town would be mid 30's with central London dropping that to 28mpg, the late 2004 cars had an interior facelift so they're worth seeking out.

Just over but I'm sure you could haggle them down, it also benefits from being mapped already & the 18's.

Non Facelift

Mercedes don't really do it for me looks wise but thanks for the alternative option.
I like the looks of the 406 and GT equally but I suspect the alfa will be quicker with a nicer interior, the Peugeot more reliable?

Yes the Alfa will be quicker than the 2.0d version but if you go for the 2.7d then that would be quicker & yes I'd agree the Pug will be more reliable.

Oh you're talking about the 407 coupe. I only like the 406. The renault I can't decide if I like the way it looks but good suggestion.

Such a shame that generation of clk and c class all have that massive slab of blank buttons. Ruins the interior for me. What makes things worse is that I've never seen a car with all of them used (even a top spec clk63 still had blanks).

Your photo is of a CLK63 Black Series which is a totally different car.

The button count is dependent on how many options that are ticked for example my CLK63 only has three buttons to spare you won't use 2 for Heated Seats 2 for the Air Cooled Seats 1 for the Rear Blind 2 for Central Locking 1 For the Drop Down Headrests 1 Parking Sensors 1 for the Towing 1 for the Ultrasonics

Extra buttons I've added 1 for my Amps 1 for my Maps (I use the Air Scarf & an Extra Parking Sensor button for this)

My CLK55 is minus the Air Cooled
My CLK320cdi has the Air Cooled seats but not the blind
My old CLK270 had everything
My other 55 had no seat options but had the rear blind
The 55 before that had the lot

The Convertible uses an extra two but Airscarf etc

So as you can see it really is dependant on spec, maybe it was Mercedes way to persuade people to upspec their cars by having the blank buttons lol

Sorry I misread your post the 406 has the looks but that period wasn't great for Peugeot electrics but they're very nice cars.

Avoid the Alfa's 2.4ltr diesel, they are money pits, stick with the 1.9 unit, its not perfect but ended up in Vauxhall's, Saab's and may be one or two others.
The 406 Coupe has the option of the 2.2ltr HDi engine, (2ltr, 2.2 and 3ltr petrol engines), if they don't have service history then avoid like the plague, if serviced then they are a very good diesel engine.

Peugeot electrics... biggest issue was the door looms, easy fix and now no longer a weak spot (most of the 306's i had needed them replacing at £75 each before fitting, solder job).
