I recently noticed that a large courier company (with whom we have a relationship and a DD) took money from my business bank account via DD that I couldn't reconcile. I queried it and when they sent me details of the transaction it turns it turns out that the bill they had charged me for was actually for a delivery by another firm in our building and had nothing to do with us and just because we have the same postcode and address they mistakenly applied it to me!

Taking a DD in error is, I think, viewed as a pretty serious transgression by banks - am I right? Before I contact this courier company to straighten this out, what are my options here? Obviously they will give the money back but what rights have I got for further compensation if any?

This courier company has in the past done very wrong by us I feel so I'm a bit aggrieved with them so I'm keen to see if I have leverage from this situation. Does it just get brushed off as "a clerical error" by banks or is this viewed as a much more serious issue?

There is an indemnity scheme for DD's that the banks and companies adhere to.

If the company are being difficult contact your bank and they *should* refund the amount without any hassle there has clearly been an error.

In my experience DD's are tightly controlled and you are protected but it also goes both ways and banks can't refund DD's without a reason for those less responsible customers.

Exactly what are you looking for compensation for? Provided the money is returned then you have not lost anything. Perhaps you could ask them for one free delivery?

Secondly, if you have had problems with this courier in the past why are you still using them?

Mistakes happen, get over it.

In case you had not realised I am not a supporter of the 'where there is blame there is a claim' culture imported from the abroad.

Same. Why would you expect any 'compensation'?

Get your money back, move on.

You would be compensated for any actual loss, e.g. their error caused another DD to bounce and you got charged for it. You would not be compensated because of a mistake that when corrected caused you no loss at all.

Yes, fair points all. As I say, I just have a history with this courier that they mis-charged us in the past so I've come at this from a place of irritation. We have actually stopped dealing with them but the DD was still live so they did it via that.

I shall, as they say, "build a bridge and get over myself". Thanks for the good counsel.

Take a lesson from that, always cancel a DD with your bank if no longer needed.
