Hi,
I have a Passat 1.6 tdi 2012 and have just had a service done by the dealer.

The car is very high mileage (150k) but perfect and having read about some issues I decided not to get the recall done.

It was serviced today and upon collection I was told they had carried out the nox recall.

I explained I hadnt been asked and they said there was a breakdown in comms.

Vw have a good will parts warranty as a result of the recall for piece of mind however it is only up to 160k and i planned for at least another year out of mine!

Whats the general thoughts / feedback?

I would ask them to put it back as it was

I would be annoyed too, if they had done the update without prior consent. Everytime my car goes near the dealership I have to tell them not to do it. Last time it was in the service advisor accidentally had it on the invoice and I went off on one big time. I was assured it was just an error in the paperwork and the update had not been done.

Not sure what you can do now it's been done but at least now they are putting some warranty behind it, although not much for you based on your mileage.

Does the car feel any different after the update?

I just don't want to take the risk with mine.

Brave taking a 5 year old car to a VW dealer but never mind. I'm not sure you've got any argument here - all updates and service measures are routinely done at dealers without reference to the customer.

There's someone on a Tiguan forum I visit having a battle with his dealer - he specifically asked for the update not to be done, but they still did it, and, while there isn't a specific problem, he thinks the engine is noisier and has some hesitancy.

Apparently the dealer can't reverse it - the software comes from the factory and the old map simply isn't there now. Dealer has offered £500 ish Haldex repair or next two services FOC.

thanks for the replies

just trying to get my head around way forward.

It seems to be the tiguans and some golfs that are having issues with the recalls, the tiguans in the main as mentioned above become noisy and lose power.

Mine seems ok however I normally get a steady high 50s mpg at about 67mpg on the motorway and it was no where near that today, however I think the ecu will need to steady its self a little after mods.

What worries me is the people with egr and similar issues.

I'm waiting to see what happens will update back but any other feedback appreciated.

As a side not this car has been one of the best I have owned (prior was a 318d touring). It is very economical, it has been 100% reliable and is very roomy!

Be interesting if you could let us know if that happens - I've always thought this "learning" that people talk of was nonsense.

I take it you have raised the matter with the dealer? VWs "trust building measure" isn't 100% clear what it means by "implemented". I think it likely means max mileage of 160K, but it could be read that it applies as long as the car hasn't already done 160K.

Whatever, see if you can get the dealer to extend the mileage - I guess, ideally for you they should ignore the mileage and just go on time.

The NOx mod is NOT a recall - just a suggested modification. My car is not going anywhere near a VAG dealer for the rest of the time I own it. It will not be having the emissions modification carried out to the ECU software.

Of course a dealer will apply the mod (they are paid by VAG to do it) unless the owner specifically asks for it NOT to be done. It seems to be true that the software mod cannot be reversed.

sheepshanks - I also thought this was nonsense but we have just had a fiar bit of work done on our A6 and it had new software installed by an indy and parts we were told to give it a few days / trips to relearn / optimize certain functions and sure enough its mpg and a few problems we had with timing etc have settled. Completely different situation I guess though!

The item have very much been described on all paperwork and docs as a recall and the book is stamped with a recall note!!!

Reading a bit the uptake on the modifications is pretty poor so I can see why they are being done like this!

I'm just a bit annoyed that I had made the decision not to have it done and wasn't asked.

The warranty or emissions system parts is 24 months or 160k if I keep it, I will obviously want this increased in mileage or term only. You can see why with my car it is a pretty grey area.

Indeed normally my very sentiments exactly, however have you seen the significant number of egr problems after the fix?

If you're that concerned then either get it remapped or insist they put the original software back on. I have a guy who can probably do that for you based in Windsor for a small fee if VW won't.

What engine do you have?

I would say mine is fractionally more noisy at 1200-1500 revs, but now done 700 miles (I do very big mileages) and the mpg is down considerably.
I had a full tank 4 weeks ago and did 889 miles this current one looks to be a long way off that!
Normally the mpg runs up quickly to high 50s on the motorway, it never went above 49 yesterday!
