My office at work is near the reception and I get to see the office smokers making a trek outside for a puff. On average that is 7 minutes a fag, 5 times a day - that equals 28 minutes a day ....... multiply it by 48 weeks and you get 16 days. That is 16 WORKING DAYS A YEAR ie 3 weeks and one day (ave 37.5hr week - Ok I know that is part time to some of you) that smokers are getting extra.

You made a mistake, the numbers are worse than you think!

7 minutes per fag
* 5 a day
* 5 days
* 48
=======
8400 minutes a year = 140 hours = 3 and a half working weeks a year.

Debs, have you been smoking something yourself? Your maths is way out ...

7 mins a fag x 5 times a day = 35 mins a days 5 =
175 mins per week =2 hours 55 mins per week. x 48 weeks = 8600 mins which is 140 hours.
7 and a half hour day = 18.666 days.

A year ago when I was smoking I'd have said it was about the same amount of time that women spend in the lav putting on their make up.

However, now as a non-smoker, I'd say it was about the same amount of time that women spend in the lav putting on their make up.

I have just calculated how much that is costing my company a year, assuming 1/3 of staff smoke AND it's around £100k

I have fired off an e-mail to the FD suggesting we invest in some nicotine patches!

Don't forget to add the time taken, getting in and out of the building from a workstation

Whoops - well you didn't expect an Essex Girl to get her maths right - might have something to do with all the numbers having rubbed off on my calculator. Bit demotivating tho'

that 100k is offset by the conversations had whilst smoking (you learn more about the company in 5 minutes than in 2 hours at an all co. meeting). all helps one be even more productive than the non smoking snoozers!

Maybe employers should offer a bonus for non-smokers!

ROFL

Leave us smokers alone - non smokers should have the same amount of breaks.. they can be productive - a recommended break from the VDU and like has already been said, time to catch up on company gossip - all oils the wheels of industry, you know..

Besides, I'll die before all the money runs out.. you non smokers are all gonna be sat here wondering what the fcuk happened

Therfore gentlemen it can be deduce that the resultant reduction in the effective working week is somewhat mirrored by the reduction in life expectancy, ie the smokers will drop dead at 2.00 on friday afternoon, but you'll have to work till five before you die. oooer? think about it. Brian.

So if you smoke, drink, drive cars that drink optimax you must be entitled to extra time off all on Gordon Brown

Bloody non-smokers. They whinge when we smoke in the office, now they whinge when we don't.

Me? I've got an ashtray on me desk. I'm a happy bunny.

And anyway, everybody knows smokers are more sociable and happier than non-smokers...
