25k mile per year hot / hyper hatch - which one?
Discussion
Hi, looking to get a hot / hyper hatch as my main car for work and family duties. Must haves are 5 seats, 5 doors, fun to drive and reliable.
Unsure at the moment how extreme I'll go but these are my thoughts:
Junior hot hatch = 2018 polo gti or 2018 fiesta st.
Hot hatch = 308 gti 270 or 2018 megane rs.
Hyper hatch = focus rs or golf r.
I know 3 of these are not out yet, but what are people's thoughts on running these cars at this sort of mileage?
And of the 3 that have been around for a few years, owners experience on reliability, general running costs and the sort of mpg that you get on a cruise and when going for it would be appreciated.
Probably have a 50 / 50 split of a and b roads around my home in Dorset and dual carriageways / motorways around the country, hence the thought of how they do on fun factor and also when sticking in cruise and going with the flow on a longer distance drive.
I also prefer to gel with a car and plan to keep it for say 4-6 years, so again reliability and also durability would effect my choice and if it's worth anything after 100-150k then that would be a bonus too.
Cheers.

I take it you're aware of just how much the running costs are going to vary between a Fiesta ST and say a Focus RS? IF you are, i'd say all you need to do is wait and drive them.
That being said, if you want to "gel" with a car and feedback is important, it's likely the Megane is likely to be a good shout, while obviously the new one isn't out yet, they have form with delivering a good driver experience. It'll probably do well on the comfort front (a likely consideration when doing 25k miles?) as it's not hardcore as an FRS/Golf R.
But basically, go out and drive them. All of the dealers should be happy to entertain you.

It seems like an awful expensive way of doing that sort of miles?
You'll be talking £400+ in fuel alone, depreciation will be severe, running costs will be significant at very least, moving up to severe on the RS or Golf R.
Do you really want to be spending maybe £1,000 a month (including depreciation, fuel and running costs) to drive a hot hatch?

For me if you're talking about Hyper Hatches for around 30k then it's these for me:

The RS Focus is a great drive & better than the Golf R in terms of a drivers car but I'd wait to see how good the new Megane is before picking one of those as the last Megane had both covered before it was retired.

Oh yes I agree it seems expensive, but I get a car allowance and the company also pay me for company mileage. Doing the sums, I think I'd just about break even on the golf, maybe lose out a little on the focus as I've heard it's a bit worse on fuel. And I'd save some car allowance on the rest. Only stipulations they put on me are 4/5 doors and under 10 years old, so fancy driving something a bit more direct and fun.
To explain a bit more, I had an Integrale Evo 2 for 5 years back in my youth and it was my only car for the first year I had it and I must admit, looking back it was the best year of driving I've had. I know some of these wont have the same feel, but its now 2017.

It sounds like a job for two cars.
Something for the long journeys and family duties:

I've thought about this and you are close. I'd keep my current car for a bit longer (Touran) and get an Elise.Something for the long journeys and family duties:

Be aware of the real world MPG of these cars.
I'm averaging 21mpg in my Golf R, when I drive it hard it can go down to 18/19.
Check out Fuelly for other comparisons on real world vehicles. Just make sure the MPG data is in U.K. MPG.
The Golf is a nice easy place to be for the long motorway journies. It's also planted and goes well through the country roads. Around town it's easy to drive in DSG form.
I found the A45 a bit plastic inside. S3 was a bit boring. M135i cramped inside and ugly outside. Didn't get to try an RS3 but do like the new saloons.
Good luck!

Yep, don't like the rs3, but a45 seems okay. Just preferring the idea of a manual. I'm in no rush, so will try some stuff out over the coming months and see what the new stuff coming out later this year / beginning of next are like before jumping in.Audi RS3

I've looked, but it's a 4 seater only and I need 5 seats for the family.
Sorry to break this to you but nothing based on a little hatchback is going to be practical for more than very occasionally having three people in the back, and your chances of getting three child car seats in is about nil. Anything smaller than a 5 series sort of car is really just a 4 seater.
I'd very much see this as a job for two cars. Something big, powerful, comfortable, probably diesel for family and work duties and then something fun for the weekends. Should easily be possible for your budget, and if you're clever with the fun car it won't depreciate much (or at all). You might even end up substantially better off for covering all your work mileage in a 530d or similar, and it'll be a hell of a lot more comfortable than a hot hatchback.

Hyper hatch? Do you mean a hot hatch thats faster than another hot hatch?
And commonly referred to these days as a Hyper Hatch. Yes.Its a bit simpler than caliing them "a hot hatch thats faster than another hot hatch", which in fairness, must apply to them all, except one?

Problem with a 3 car family is the wife. No matter how I spin it, 2 cars max is an easier sell to her. Secret to a successful marriage, choose your battles.;)

Yep, I get this. I can get 3 kids in the back of a golf (only 1 booster needed). And for longer journeys we use the wife's Caravelle.

Have you ever tried a larger, powerful car? I know a lot of people in the UK seem to fixate on the Focus sized cars and just never consider anything larger. For the mileage you're doing something like a 550i, an XF-R or an XF with the 5.0, or something along those lines would be much more appropriate and I find that in many ways they are a lot more enjoyable that a hot hatch over large mileages because they aren't so compromised by their starting point as ruthlessly cost engineered hatchbacks. Or a 335i might be worth a go.Problem with a 3 car family is the wife. No matter how I spin it, 2 cars max is an easier sell to her. Secret to a successful marriage, choose your battles.;)
The 550i twin turbo makes a smashing sleeper, a friend bought one last year and it looks exactly like a 520d but has 400odd bhp.
