Hi

First time AMG owner here having been a VW fan for the last few years. So my trusty Mk5 Golf R32 DSG which I had owned for the last eight years was recently part exchanged for a 2012 Mercedes E63 5.5 V8 Biturbo with Performance and Drivers Packs.

I'm new to Mercedes but from what I can gather a few pre-facelift W212s were made with the Biturbo engine. I prefer the look of the pre-facelift, though the facelift does look amazing also, I like the old-school Mercedes look.

The car has quite a high spec I think:
Obsidian Black Metallic
Performance Package Plus
AMG Drivers Pack
Reversing camera
Distronic plus
All the safety stuff. Blind spot assist and lane keep assist.
Heated, cooled and massage dynamic seats
Digital Freeview TV
Electric rear roller blind
Stop start
Pano roof
Three zone climate

Pretty much everything I think, but so annoyed the original owner didn't spec folding rear seats...perhaps they could be retrofitted?

So far, I'm in love with the noise and the interior is a lovely place to be. When driving normally the V8 rumbling away is very reassuring.

A few pics of the Golf and the Merc. Happy to hear comments both good and bad!!

E63 must be stonking, bet it's so much fun, congrats!

I bet being the more efficient turbo V8 it's probably as good if not better mpg-wise as the R32 for daily driving?

Thanks for the kind words.

It's odd, as I always thought the R32 wasn't as bad on fuel as people made out, but on a recent trip to Bath from London with a few foot down moments, I managed to get 29mpg!

The engine is a thing of beauty and it handles well too for a biggish barge but the thing that I'm most impressed with is the tech. For a five year old car it has loads of stuff that brand new cars are making a song and dance about having now.

Will post more pics once I work out how to not exceed mb limit!!

Literally one of my top three cars. How much? Running costs? Need a new step-child?

The prefacelift looks just so right, the facelift and the new model are awful in comparison.

I never knew they did the 5.5 in the pre facelift, I think it's just become my ideal car.

I had a go in a 6.3 and the facelift 5.5 at MB world and doing standing starts with the v8 and then the turbos coming in made me giggle and my legs feel like jelly.

Enjoy, maybe debage it for real stealth factor.

Welshbeef & w00tman - Cost me £21k less the p/x. Got a pretty good price for my R32 as low mileage and high spec....could have got more selling privately but didn't seem worth all the potential agg to me. Quite pleased as it's only done 35k, full MBSH and just had it's A service. I've also signed up to a three year Mercedes Service Plan as my next services should be B, A and B. AMG are currently offering off £150 the plan, so it's costing me £1500 or £40 per month, which seems quite reasonable.

In terms of running costs, I already think it's better than the R32. Wafting about around town with stop/start on gets me about 20mpg. On a run I've seen 28/29mpg but I'm sure I can get higher as that included quite a full throttle spurts. The car feels like a tank, albeit a very fast one, so hoping that translates across to parts that have a long life. I tend to spare no expense on replacing bits with my cars, so have a rainy day fund which I hope I don't have to dip into.

Nickbrapp - I'm biased but have to agree that the pre-facelift just looks so right. Menacing yet subtle. I also test drove a 6.2 before deciding on the 5.5. The 6.2 is a masterpiece of an engine, but found it was still quite loud when all you want to do is get from A to B quietly. The pre-facelift 6.2s also only come with the dot matrix style trip computer, while the 5.5s were upgraded to full colour. The pre-facelift looks even better in Palladium Grey in my opinion, highlights the sharp, aggressive lines even more.

I like the idea of one of these. Driver's Pack with the increased speed limiter would be a must for me. Well done finding one.

Let's just say the acceleration at motorway speeds is astonishing. It's quite disconcerting as the cabin remains hushed and it feels like the engine is not straining at all. Effortless sums it up.

As it's limited to 186mph with the drivers pack the mind boggles as to what the very max might be.

I had thought of debadging but so far it flies under the radar pretty well as is.

That looks really great. I think its the absence of "privacy" glass that gives it an edge over the usual AMG-fare. The wheels look nicely plain, too. The way the OP describes the fuss-free acceleration sounds very appealing.

Definite de-badge for me; delete the rear spoiler and paint the callipers black and it would look almost discreet.

Stunning car...!

I am also for de-badging as those who know cars will know what it is. I have de badged all my cars since my first Alfa 156TS...makes them a bit easier to cleans as well !

My current 156 Veloce JTDM 150 (remapped) has a nice set of the older Teledials on it, no badges and rear tints...even a fellow Alfisti thought it was a base model Turismo!

And that suits me fine !

OP

Post up a vid of it stationary engine running then blip up the throttle. Not many cars sound this good.

Falsey - Thanks, it really is a lot of car for the money. However, it did also include a mint, low mileage Mk5 Golf R32!

Welshbeef - The noise is addictive. Will try to put a vid up on weekend. Is it the same process as for pictures?
