Hi all

My current vehicles are a 2008 Merc S65 AMG and a 2003 CL55 AMG with some tweaks.

The CL has to go, as it needs a full body respray, which means putting 6k into a car worth 7/8k. Its also getting a bit long in the tooth (100k).

I really love the look of the 215 CL. I also want a v8. The v12 is nice, but does not give as much aural pleasure as the AMG V8s!

I was thinking of replacing it with a 216 CL63, either the 5.5 bi turbo, or the glorius M156 6.2. Two issues, the CL63 is not THAT fast in 6.2 form, and the interior is obviously the same/very similar as the 221 S class!

Budget is 20/40K Running costs are moot (obviously).

Thoughts/suggestions? Doesnt have to be AMG/Merc, its just what I know. Something quirky would be nice. Face blisteringly quick is also good. Been looking for a few weeks and nothing jumps out...

6 series beemer, Audi A7 are the two obvious candidates.

If you want noise, what about something I-talian.

Audi A7 is rather nice, RS7 even better. Not a fan of the interior though.

If I was going down that route, would probably look at CLS's, as they are the originator of that sector, and do it very well. (plus I love their rear lights).

What Italian though, maybe something alfa like. Ferrari a bit out of my budget I think.

An Alpina B6 would tick the rare V8 box but also hard to find for sale!

The hunt is half the fun! Makes it more special if you had to bide your time and it's not some run of the mill car that are common fare.

True. Would have to drive one before deciding, and that may prove difficult.

Well there are 3 coupe B6 and 4 cab B6 and 3 B6S coupe and 2 B6S cabs to put numbers to your search.
The only B6 coupe in f model type was written off with flood damage.
The Alpina register forum is your best bet for these rare beasts.

They are rather nice. A friend had one for 4 years or so. It looked nice, but the driving experience was a bit hit or miss, mainly due to the gearbox I believe. I may try for a drive in one.

My dad has had both versions of the CL63 (both mapped with some exhaust work carried) he actually prefers the 6.2 as he found the throttle response was better & as an overall package it was more suited to the N/A engine, an alternative is to try to find a (good luck with this search) CL65 as the best of both worlds or alternatively get a 600 have a map added & you won't be far off you 65's power output.

.

I already have an S 65 AMG 221, wouldn't want 2 cars with the same engine.

I was waiting for a CL65 for a long long time but nothing came up, which is why I went with the S class in the end.

I will have a drive of both the the 5.5 and na 6.3 and see what they are like. Maybe a C63 coupe ...

V8 Vantage
Nissan GTR 400/500/600/700+ BHP ...
Maserati QP or GT
Jaguar XKR-S (really rather rare 550BHP http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017... ) I looked at one before I picked my Vantage, I always wanted an AML otherwise it was one of these!
Bentley Arnage / Continental / Flying Spur

If you already have a MB why get another?

Hmm the Jag looks rather nice, I must say.

I have a problem with Mercedes, which is why I am looking at another.

Am a mod on the mb forum, and have lots of mechanic experience with them, all the kit etc. Probably had 30+ MB s

V8 vantage looks tasty too. I think the British side of things is pulling me across. Thanks!

Honestly, the V8V is an amazing looking car, sounds biblical and has a real sense of occasion, but ... it is fast, but not in the same league as the Jaguar.

I think of the V8V as a modern classic, loud, N/A, looks great and manual smile

Does seem to be the trifecta. Small, V8 and a sense of occasion being an Aston. Whats the running costs on them like?

Fine really, less than you S65 I would imagine!

I budget £3k per year, this includes tyres, clutch, etc, all work at an AM MD, averaged out I would say £3k is ok, don't buy a dog though.
