I'm selling a boat and just had a rather alarming message asking "What is your bottom price?". eek Very expensive indeed, I don't get down like that!

Anyone else had any amusingly ridiculous enquiries in a similar vein?

Was once selling a shed of a corolla 2002 d4d had it advertised for 950 euro. I was offered 500 and an ounce of the devil's finest lettuce by text. I refused outright.who in their right mind would offer to trade drugs with a complete stranger by text. I could of been the 5-0, and what idiot values an ounce of grass at 450 euro. Simpletons😣

I would reply saying that the hull is not for sale separately, it comes as part of the boat.

Haha I remember when I was buying a boat, got an absolute steal out of an old guy who was just looking to move on.

Boat was for sale for £1250 (Halcyon 24ft bilge keel, 'OK' condition), he was also selling the trailer for another £500. So I had gone out to see it, fairly local so I was somewhat non-committal, kind of a spur of the moment purchase if I'm honest, I didn't have the means to tow it home as I would have to borrow a friends Navara the following weekend. Anywho, inspected the boat, was happy with the advertised condition, old guy was really nice but didn't have the health to work on it anymore (it had sat at the side of his house for about 6 years, trailer was looking very sorry for itself). I told him I'd be happy with £1500 all in for boat & trailer, we shook on it, old guy invited us into his house for a cup of tea & to go over all the receipts he had for the boat. (he was eccentric... but nice)

After 30 minutes of chatting I ended up parting with £3000 and driving home with his L200, boat & trailer in tow, had to make a 2nd trip to the bank, I feel like I stiffed the guy a fair bit but his wife looked like she was about to jump with joy the moment I left the driveway biggrin.

Sold the boat on a few years later to a colleague, £3000 for the boat, £500 for the trailer and then sold the L200 a few months after for £2200. Although I did a fair bit of work tarting up all 3, boat got fresh paint, fully rebuilt the outboard which wasnt working on sale, trailer had tyres & a wheel bearing, L200 had a service & a very very thorough clean.

Ignore him, if Hull is for sale, I'm an elephant's scrotum.

That's an easy one to answer...

"My rock bottom price is just over twice your top offer."
wink
That usually sorts out the time wasters, chancers and cheapskates.

Why do sellers get so offended at buyers chancing their arm?
I do it all the time (for things I want, not part of the c'mon bruv best price init crew), and have had some great bargins in the past.

I think it is the phrasing of "What is your best price" (or often text speak such as Wot is ur best price) that makes people roll their eyes. As how do you answer that question? What they should be saying is "I would like to offer £xx due to..." or "I only have £xxx to spend" and so on.

Or the woman that messaged me recently with a low offer telling me she'd broken her foot & couldn't work so had no money.
Don't buy it then, simple!

You can't have sold much, this is pretty much a standard fare question that you get.

I normally reply that I'll take that as the deposit and the rest upon collection.

I'll use that next time!

Was asked 'best price' question last month from some mouth-breather on eBay. Told him my best price would be around twice the asking price.

I've sold a great many things, it was the exact phrasing of this one that I found childishly amusing.

I used to annoy me on eBay when I'd list something for auction, and get a message asking "is there a 'Buy it now' price?". I always wanted to just reply "well, do you see one?" but figured that might be the only bidder so best to just say no.

Have you never seen Bargain Hunt? Seems pretty much all the vendors have a price they will accept that's lower than the ticket price. Sold my Dad's old house recently, priced it rather cheekily and accepted an offer that was 50K less than we asked, but still happy with the price we got.

For a bit of a laugh, when flogging something on eBay, I tend to reply back to the illiterate arm-chancers in their own writing style. For example:

"wots ur bst price 4 cash 2day?"

To which I will reply with something like:

"ma bst price 4 cash is da bigist numba dat is smaked down wen dis auction ends. Da big numba wins it. Da little numba is nutink. u get me?"

Most twig that I am royally ripping the piss, but some think I'm being serious. One person responded back with "Safe, bruv". laugh

I don't mind if they offer a sum - I can just say no.

I mind when they just ask me to tell them a low price. Because that puts all the risk of negotiation on my shoulders - I am not going to do all of the hard work for the buyer - I want them to chance something as well. I have made my opening bid with the asking price.

All about attitude imo, sold my car recently the buyer asked me by email to briefly indicate the full service record and other details not in the advert. No problem at all, he also asked about price negotiations, to which I said 'very small amount discount available' but already priced competitively. He purchased my car.
I have enquiries about two cars over the past couple of weeks, neither response answered my specific enquiry. They lost a possible private sale, from my side as a prospective buyer I don't want to drive for a few hours back and forth finding the car is unsuited to me, simple questions and answers go along way imo.
