OLED TV - Talk to Me
Discussion
Hi All,
Purchased a samsung TV over 5 years ago and at the time it wa sa 2 year old model so the tech I have is around 7 years. Its served me well however I promised myself when I buy a new house I would get myself a new TV.
I have somewhat kept up to date with the tech progression and there is a general trend towards OLED TVs
Spent the last 3 days in and out of various stores and I can easily see why they are the bees knees. OLED quality just seems gorgeous. Even compared to samsungs QLED tv which still had motion blurr on its demo just cant compare to the OLED.
I had a look at the sony and panasonic OLEDs and they are jaw droping good however I just dont want to spend 5k on a TV.
I know LG were early or first adopters of the tech but I am a little confused about the line up and if there is a noticable difference in the models (esp between 2016-2017).
I know all OLED TV's will be vastly better than what I have now however I would like it again to last me 5 years or so.
Ideally I don't want to be spending more then 1.5-1.8k on a TV, has to be atleast 55"
Any recommendations or help would be great!

I dove in early with LG and it is superb. I expect later offerings are just as sublime. I did view Samsung top of the shop at the same time and it was no where near. But that is me, someone else will prefer the Samsung. I was fortunate in I also got a 3d and that is superb.
However, what ever anyone says, the only pair of eyes that can make that final decision is yours. My only regret is I wish I had gone 66".
look at lots in different shops and get the best extended warranty.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Totally agree I think OLED is leaps ahead of any of the LED panels I seen. The only LED panel thought was nice enough to hace was a 58" panasonic model or a distinct sort of stand at 1k. However future proofing the TV means spending an extra say 500 pounds and getting an OLED is a no brainer.
I assume LG only brought out the OLED line up last year? 2016?

Mine is a 2015/16
This may be of help. Meant to stick in the reply above.

I've had a 55" LG OLED for about a year now and it is superb picture wise. It looked big when first installed as it replaced a 42" Panasonic V series which was c7-8 years old. However, as the LG has a very slim bezel around the actual screen (Panasonic had 1.5-2" of bezel) the overall size of the LG set is not as big as first thought....................so a 65" 4K OLED will be purchased to upgrade it later this year and take advantage of the SkyQ boxes I now have
As mentioned above go to a decent retailer who have a demo room and see both set sizes with your own eyes to see what suits you best

According to Mr Salesman, the OLED can suffer with the same screen burn issues as the plasma screens did.
Whats that then........? What was he trying to sell you instead.....I know what burn is really, but not seen it in over a year on this but probably not watching the stuff that will do it. Even the humble CRT would do it though. The TV does a sort of reset (compensation cycles) after x number of minutes after turning it off (still on at the wall). I let mine do that at every power down, very audible click is heard after 10-30 mins of off.

My TV was in for repair and he wasn't trying to sell me anything. Was just a comment made in general while I was looking at the TVs. (They mainly sell Panasonic.)
He's correct.BUT!!
This is an issue on OLED TVs with contrast and OLED light set to max, with overall settings at default 'shop', displaying static images for 12 hours a day/7 days a week and (importantly and touched on above) the TV being powered down from the mains not giving it the opportunity to go through its clever little refresh cycle after three hours of power up.
The sort of misuse that would see a plasma ruined in weeks.
OLED from LG aren't fragile and sensible, everyday use will see them lasting years.
Regularly pausing something from Sky for hour after hour and not allowing it to do a standby refresh might give you issues - some would argue possibly deserved

As daft as it sounds, I've gone into settings so that the LG badge glows when in standby because, believe it or not, you cannot tell if the TV is still on and displaying a black picture or if it's actually off!
No need on a plasma, LCD/LED or CRT - the grey gives it away

2016/2017 OLED models are pretty similar, I don't know current pricing but you could get a 55 inch for about £1.8k recently. 2017 models do not have 3D, some 2016 models do. All 2016 models use the same panel, with B/C models using different driving circuitry to the E/G. All 2017 models share the same panel and driving circuitry so should look the same...unless panels are hand picked for more expensive TV's...LG say they are not. You pay extra for the more intricate design of the higher end modesl and built-in sound bars etc.
