Basically I'm sorting out design of the sign writing on my new van. Im an electrician.

Most of the writing will be in black and orange, as this is the colours in my logo.

My phone number is: 0117 xxx x 999.

Now someone suggested having the first 8 digits in black, and the 999 in red, to empathise the emergency callouts?

Im not so sure, it looks ok on design, but gut says it will look a bit Crass/Cringey in reality.....

So what do the taste experts think??

I'd say irrelevant rather than crass.

You have absolutely no connection with the emergency services.

This is tough, I'm totally torn on it. Part of me thinks it's brilliant and quite clever. Another part of me thinks it's lame. I know that doesn't help but it does create something of a mixed emotion for me. Crucially, I don't think it's in bad taste and would ever put me off as such.

Go for it. You're not attempting to pass off your services as part of the authorities, but it should make your number more memorable and make it stand out on the van.

i would think having a memorable domain name would be more important these days

Not sure I entirely agree. If I'm looking for an emergency plumber / electrician etc. I'll want to speak to them immediately rather than send them an email etc. so I'll grab my phone for that.

Different if I was looking for a kitchen fitter or something then yes, a website is more important.

People will see the 999 but without it being in a different colour. I think that's distraction. Concentrate on the design.

What about keeping the colour of the 999 consistent but use an extra bold version of the font for it, and underline it with a line of black and white checker strip (or whatever colour best describes emergency?)

Part of me wants to suggest a blue flashing light attached to one of the nines or something but maybe that's getting a bit daft.

Thanks, this is basically what it would look like:

Idea is purely to give that little edge that people will notice, and partially remember the little detail.

For example when working at house A, the neighbour may notice.
Then in future when neighbour needs an electrician they will remember house A had someone, and ask for recommendation/details.

To be fair my bright orange logo and clean van slicks out (compared to the usual knackered dirty transit) on its own.
As my last van i often got asked for a card in petrol stations etc.

However the red 999 could give this bit extra, and to me red 999 catches my eye if i look at it?

Personally I would perhaps make the 999 orange to match your logo rather than red. Still stands out but fits in a bit better with the rest.

Visually I still don't like it, and especially not spread over two doors.

If 'Emergency Callouts' is your USP then splash that about.

I agree. Personally I don't think I'd have a space either side of the 0 either.

Agree with the above if you want people to think of you for emergency callouts, make the "Emergency Callouts" part of the design more prominent.

Yes, I think that too.

As above, too much emphasis on you rather than what you're trying to sell.

I like the overall feel of it though and the style.

I think it's great you are doing some market research here....

Consider being much more bold....

Switch the orange for high visibilty orange..

Upsize logo and upsize the word Electrican....heavy font like Bebas Neu.

Consider orange chevrons...perhaps just one side of the door...

Bullet points not required...

What does the side look like?

Thanks, i think I've decided the red does not work, and will probably stick to black, i think there is enough orange to grab the attention.

TBH the orange does not look that orange on the screen, but its the same i used last time, and its pretty bright and reflective.

The side is pretty much the same thing. The one annoying thing about the side is nothing looks level due to all the van lines!

I like the red or orange 999.

Just put the full number on one door only. The single digit 1 gets lost on the join.

I like black/orange for the phone as per your name, but definitely on one door only, unless you make it a lot bigger.

My main gripe is the bullet list. Every electrician known to man says the same basic things, domestic and commercial, emergency call out, rewires etc. You're a spark, it says so in the main section so don't tell me again, I know what sparks do. Instead tell me why I should remember/choose you. Are you the cheapest, fastest, tidiest? Do you guarantee your work, specialise in rewires or offer no call out charge?

Give me something different, or else you're the same as every other spark van out there. If I had my way I'd turn it all upside down, your big usp at the top and your company name at the bottom.

Don't try to be clever with the number format as people tend to be used to a set format that is easier to remember. Unless every other number in your area is 0117 214 0 999 then stick with the format that locals will remember 01172 140999.

Lots of people will know your name. Far fewer will kniw what you do,.

Do any of your potential clients care what your name is?
