So I arrive at work this morning to be met with a scene of relative carnage. I work for a large multinational and another division of the company that happens to be in the same town as us is being wound down leaving just 6 staff so they've decided to move them in with us. We also having all the good furniture etc. that they had in their office which has been moved in over the weekend....

Only problem with this is they've chucked my office chair in the skip and left a different one except that my old chair was bought especially for me as it was taller than most as I'm 6ft 3". I've also got a height adjustable desk so I feel like I'm sitting on the floor now frown Also anything else feels quite alien at the moment compared to my old chair, I'd got quite cosy in that one.

Asked the boss where my chair had gone and explained why I needed it, a new chair will be ordered for me but it's just stupid that they chucked out my old one. FFS mad

I just wish they'd have informed us that this was going on over the weekend as I would have stuck something to my chair explaining not to chuck it. Could have saved them some money to as now they're going to have to buy me another.

Not a good start to a Monday and sorry for the rant, felt the need to get it off my chest somewhere.

It just means you were set in your ways and had become too comfortable. I don't like that in a role, you should leave and get a new job, push yourself.

You can learn a lot about folk when you hear them cry about someone moving the pen pot and gonks on their desk. smile

"Next week you're getting new shiney desks!" => staff feel valued and motivated

Staff come in to work to discover their familiar surroundings have been binned without warning => staff feel they're being treated with a lack of respect, etc

So congratulations to your managers for turning an opportunity to boost morale into the exact opposite.

Off-topic, but I'm 6'4" and I sit on a 'normal' chair and have a 'normal' desk (I work from home).

Now wondering if I should get a different chair and height-adjustable desk..?

Does it make a lot of difference, OP?

Never thought about it before.

You're probably right, time to move on smile

This thread is very much tongue-in-cheek, the screw up was very quickly acknowledged this morning and a new chair is being ordered as I write this post.

Certainly does for me. I was quite a few years back when we were a much smaller company I'm not sure we were having workstation assessments. I was getting a bit of lower back trouble and discomfort in the shoulder so I looked up how my work area should be set up for posture etc. and just realised it was all wrong. I took matters into my own hands and raised the desk up by sticking a few telephone directories (when they were thick!) under each leg and then found a better chair that wasn't being used. Stayed like this for a year or two and the aches went. Then somebody sat on my desk and dislodged it from the phone books causing a loud crash, my boss agreed to get me a new one plus a better chair as they'd started to embrace health and safety by then. All good after that and now we have annual assessments.

Sympathies!... I'm 6'6" with a long term back issue...my old work ordered me a custom chair...bliss! Roll on several years and they wanted the change it for a standard as it didn't fit the refreshed decor... Er no bloody way...
When I quit they let me have it.... Now sits in my study at home with an appropriately raised desk.. comfy as hell and I can do several hours work / slobbing without issue.. ergonomics isn't tosh!!!
New workplace just got me a new one too!!!

I'm only 5'11'' and I have a raised desk at work with a more suitable chair. Looked in to getting the same chair for home and found it be a grands worth.

I bought a cheaper chair.

We employed a young chap a few years ago who was over 7' tall.

We ended up standing his desk on bricks & he reclined a large office chair so he could fit, we priced up special desks/chairs & the cost was eye watering! As we suspected, being a tough sales role, he didn't last long enough to warrant the expense.

he may have lasted had the correct equipment been supplied from the outset since ergonomic discomfort takes great tolls on all aspects of composure. behavior, demeanor, etc... ... youll never know
