Afternoon all,

Lease car (Fiesta Ecoboost) is going back in a couple of months (although already exceeded mileage so ready to buy anytime!) so I've started having a look at what to replace it with, this time I will be buying due to an increase in mileage with work.

The car's I've looked at have ranged from an Audi TT to a Vauxhall Insignia so I really have no clue!

Budget: up to 10k.

No real preference 3 door / 5 door, no kids etc.

Will be doing appox. 15k a year in mileage, so something comfy and realiable that looks 'smart' with a half decent MPG would fit the criteria. Not after the quickest car but also not after a 1.0 Corsa!

Hit me with your recommendations!
Cheers.

I would be going for something comfortable and automatic, so Mondeo, Insignia Avensis, they should have some warranty left too.

If mainly motorway cruising, and you don't need a hatchback, I would go for a classic repmobile - Mondeo, Insignia, Avensis etc.

If a hatchback would be useful - Civic or Octavia.

I would be tempted to go for one of the sub brands (skoda / seat etc.) where you pick up the technology of a bigger brand without the price...
I have just had an Octavia go back after 2 years and c. 10,000 miles (scout estate - 2 litre diesel) - in immaculate condition and probably will sell for that kind of price at auction - from a dealer you would get a 3-4 year old one and they will eat the miles in comfort...

I'd say go for a Mondeo/Insignia etc in Auto form is a good shout.

Insignias are better value if not as good a steer & IMO not as nice inside but you do get a much newer car.

I'd probably go for the Mondeo but could understand taking the Insignia.

I wouldn't rule out another lease purely on the mileage. I've got my current lease on 15k miles / year and it still worked out quite cost effective compared to buying.

On the basis that the Fiesta was costing about £200 per month (i.e. £2,400 per annum), you'd need to keep anything you buy for £10k for 4-5 years to make the numbers stack up.

If you're OK with keeping a £10k car for that length of time, then all good. Otherwise, another lease may be the answer.

How does that work ? if the Fiesta was £2400 per year in 4 years you would have paid £9600, in 4 years time a £10000 car even with depreciation is still going to be worth £4000 so your loss is £6000 not £9600. I still think the OP is right to look at buying outright.
