To buy or not to buy....
Discussion
Afternoon gents, would value your input here
]
Earlier this year my Mum passed away. It was all very unexpected and a bit of a shock. As the only child I did most of the things a daughter would do like drive her to appointments, shopping etc. Even though she didn't live too far from me my car did still get some use.
I've realised that I haven't filled my tank since April and I don't think I've actually driven my current car (a practical Fiat 500) at all for about a month.
All this kind of got me to thinking, if I'm doing such low mileage (I work a 2 minute walk from my doorstep, though we are considering moving home later this year the area we want is only a 5 minute drive from work) I might as well have something a little more 'fun'.
Other half keeps pointing at MX5's, but I've fallen a bit in love with an older Boxster.
Practically, my mileage will be under £3k a year, probably a fair bit less than that.
Insurance shouldn't be an issue with 15 years no claims
Budget is around £5k (though could rise a bit)
I'd also be looking to purchase around winter time so not in the sunshine convertible weather.
Am I mad? Tell me the pitfalls!
Thanks

hi
sorry to hear about your mum :-(
yes you are mad to buy a £5k boxster imo it still has £40k car running costs and a failed MOT could be 1/2 the value of the car.
A good set of tyres is £700 a service £400 to £1.2k, older models also need more upkeep like rads, shocks etc etc you will pay out every few months for stuff.

I'm used to running older cars, I've had Morris Minors and TR7's as daily drivers in the past, but obviously fixing a mog is a fair bit easier and cheaper than a Porsche.
Just don't want my heart to rule my head.

Spend a bit more if you can and buy a low miles garage queen for up to £10k on an early 986 preferably a 2.7 or 3.2. I think it will be depreciation free motoring with your type of usage. Make sure you buy a good one by having someone who nows them look over it
Might be worth holding fire a bit and saving more then. I'm not a patient person but I shall try
Thanks
Early Boxsters are fantastic cars and absolute bargains - as long as you go in with your eyes open.
Buy one that has been looked after & there's no reason why it should be expensive to run. Look for a car where the suspension / clutch / rad etc.. refresh has been done already - they are out there.

I had a 987.1 Cayman and remember that the road tax was £495 per annum (ouch!). Perhaps the Boxster you are looking at also hits that mark? Worth checking before you jump in as it is a big lump to find every year and there are, I am sure, much cheaper alternatives (many named above).

For lower-budget open top fun, I'd definitely contemplate an MX-5 or perhaps an MGB!

Oh god I think that would be divorce..... he has a TR6 Bert

Thanks to everyone who's offered advice. Lots to think about. hadn't realised tax was that much either so thats another consideration.
I've just sold my 05 plate for £9000 if I was you I would save another £5000 and get something decent. Get it checked over before buying if it's a private sale. To be fair porsche's arnt normal cars they are more expensive to run but they are well worth it. It's my 50th early next year and I've got £40,000 to spend I was going to get an Aston Martin vantage as it's my dream car but I'm being swayed to buying another boxster if I do I can afford one that's 2 or 3 years old get the Aston and it's 10 years old. Decisions decisions
