Morning all,

Thinking out loud here, but can anyone give me indicative cost to insure a van that would be hired out to members of the public, with the usual stipulations (ie max 6points, excess to pay etc)? I am toying with buying a little van, just as i always seem to need one (which would also be handy for trackdays), but putting it to work when i don't need it.

I am already thinking thinking things like public liability insurance alone will make it cost prohibitive but as i say, it was an idea and something perhaps Mrs Crash could manage.

Cheers!

We have an any driver >25 policy which is basically £10k. That covers up to 4 vehicles for commercial use / hire / reward etc. 3rd party.

Rewind only 4-5 years ago and it was under half that cost.

Don't think anyone will do that.

Even if you could get the cover, there is ball all in it as some of the established providers are so cheap a small player can't compete unless they get some sort of a contract to supply.

FYI - the hire & reward bit doesn't allow you to hire the vehicles out without a driver....SDH is a separate use. Hire and reward covers the vehicle for carrying people or goods for financial reward.

Jon - have you clocked the courier operators setting up as SDH fleets and renting the vans out to the drivers?

SDH has been cheaper than courier but it's cocking things up for me.

I can't answer your question regarding costs but to see things from the other side, if I need a van for something I can go to my local B+Q and drive off in a Hertz24x7 van for £10 an hour which I have prebooked online and can check the van back in myself using the kit inside the van when I've finished with it. Simple, quick, cheap and no need to talk to anyone in badly fitting orange overalls.

You might find as a single operator you simply can't compete with that kind of price/service.
