Budget: 16-20k:

The big question is: 4.2 or 3.0S (I say S because they're not turbo).

4.2 - Best i can get is year 2012 Coupe with 35k on the clock.
3.0 - Best i can get is year 2012 Sportback/Cabrio with 50k on the clock.

Which do you prefer and why? Discuss pls

If I was you i'd get a 2009 S5 V8 being sold by Lostprophet!

Joking aside, I would get a V8 couple. Not into the soft top myself. The turbo is faster no doubt especially if tuned however it doesnt sound as nice as a V8. I think once must try a NA V8 before they disappear for good. Also the V8 is a solid engine!

I owned an S5 3.0 supercharged 2012, conv
Was a great car.
My only quip is the amount of fuel it uses.
the best i could get was 22 mpg on a motorway.
It cost me 500 pounds of fuel to drive to Spain
1500 miles, the same journey in my 750bhp Noble only cost me 350.
So you may as well buy the V8 as at least you will use the same amount, but with more power and fun

Haha, I'm looking for a 2010+ one so yours is too old biggrin.

I've decided i'm going to get the V8 since that V8 sound/power far offsets the 2mpg it would gain from the V6. Also I've heard the supercharger whine from the V6 gets annoying after a while.

They are very different engines, coupled to different gearboxes, which means they have quite distinct characters.

The V8 with a manual box would give you a bit of the feeling of best of both, but with the commonly specced 6 speed ZF auto in the coupe they're more of a cruiser. The v6t doesn't sound great when the car is new, but I've noticed ours has much more of an exhaust note once it got over 45k miles. The s-tronic box is much more suited to rapid progress - you couldn't get it with a manual once the coupe went v6t.

I had the forerunner to the V8 in the S5, in my S8, coupled to a 5 speed ZF box. Although sporting for the type, it wasn't exactly rapid. The 6 speed box is better than the 5, but still an old-ish school slusher.

Our S5 Sportback covers off family cruiser and lunatic when required, and the difference is largely down to the gearbox. You could never get the V8 with s-tronic, so that's not an option.

On fuel they are both comically bad for what they are. Our v6t does 18mpg average and can be coaxed to 26 if driving like a saint on a long run, without much use of its fast cruise pace. This is one area where buying a facelift makes a massive difference - it introduces a more economically minder supercharger and engine mapping and it appears this easily adds 5mpg in typical use, if not more.

I had an S4 with the V8 engine in it.
Great car, owned it for 7 years, the noise being a big part of it.
Cam chain rattle was an issue on this engine in that car, so possibly something to watch on the S5 V8 too?

Had the S5 sportback for 18 months. Feels more rapid, especially with the DSG. I really like the noise it makes, the exhaust gives a nice bark on swift up changes under load.
The Sportback is incredibly practical, far more so than the coupe. More room in the back seats and the boot is still big enough for loads of stuff.

MPG is marginally better on this car , probably averaging 22 as opposed to 20 in the V8 I had.
