When you use it and are on the inside lane and approach a slower vehicle the first thing that happens is the car brakes if you don't start to change lanes early enough. Any one following must think why is that idiot braking........

I thought, in most cases, it sees the other vehicle and simply decelerates - might feel like braking but it's not.

It only applies braking if it's necessary to slow the car more significantly. Could be wrong.

It's hard to tell, but fills like braking compared to say cancelling cruise control?

Definitely applies the brakes as much as just decelerating...pretty much mimics whatever the car in front is doing obviously. i.e. if they brake and thus scrubbing speed of relatively quickly your car will brake too.

Coming back to add; if you indicate (to overtake) the system recognises the intention to overtake and suppresses the system slightly - obviously only works when you can clearly overtake!
