Mauritius?

Has anyone here been on hols to Mauritius lately?

If so where did you stay and what were your thoughts?

Went the year before last.. Lovely place, friendly people, stayed with friends out there so can't recommend a hotel as such.

If you go, rent a car and get out of the hotel, there is so much to see which is usually missed by most of the Tourists.

Went there last new year and stayed at Legends on the north coast, had a fab time, thoroughly recommend the hotel.

Le Tousserok is also nice, but a bit more bling

North coast is more Touristy, full of bloody french.. south coast is more relaxed and full of rampant Honeymooners.

Flew with Air Maurituis...they were very good, although i flew econamy and I suspect you will fly first Rich!

Flew with BA, not a disaster but a long flight - about 11 hours I think.

Mauritius is definitely the nicest of the Indian Ocean islands, I say that having been to the seychelles (never again) and the maldives (nice, but preferred mauritius)

As vixpy says, lots of french holiday there (island was a french colony)

awesome place. Thought it was far nicer than the Bahamas. I stayed at La Pirogue on the West coast. I played golf a few times on the East coast at the St Germain (apologies for the speeling) and each time we crossed the hills in the centre of the island the weather wasnt as pleasant and more windy so not so sure I'd recommend the east coast. Fantastic island.

Driving is a hoot there as well, due to the fact that tax on any car up to 2 litres is 80% and anything over is 180%.. Yes a 5 series Beemer is 100K!! everyone drives around in pickups which have no tax..

There is a motorway, called the M1 running north to south of the island, and yes the police have radar traps.

oh, and I flew with Air Maurituis too. Not sure what sort of advice you want on the airline. It got us there in one piece! a flights a flight to me I guess. We did have a mare on the way home when the hydraulics failed over madagascar and we were turned around to spend another night in Maurituis. Not as great as it sounds when you get to the hotel room at 6am for a wake up call at 7am and then back to the airport to watch them dismantling the plane on the runway in front of the lounge...

That hotel had chalets in the grounds which I prefer to a big hotel block to be honest. Bit couply (i was single at the time), but then find anywhere in Maurituis that isnt

Hi Rich,

When search is working have a look for a post by me with the word mauaritus and honeymoon in it, some good responces in there.

We are off to le touessrok in August for two weeks for our honeymoon. From what I've heard it should be lovely. can't wait

Cannnot reccomend it more!!! Haven't been since i was 10 but it is a lovely place. Le Tousserok is ok, as is Grand Mer.

But then I'm biased as my mother and her family are all from Mauritius.

Took the wife and kids there a couple of years ago. The island itself isn't that great - all the forest has been cut down to grow sugarcane and the towns are pretty scabrous.

We stayed in a fantastic hotel (Sofitel Imperial) on the west coast - would highly recommend it but not cheap - www.sofitel.com/sofitel/fichehotel/gb/sof/resort/1144/fiche_hotel.shtml
There's also a Hilton next door, but don't know what it's like.

We flew out Air France from Paris, so not much use to you. If you have kids, take them to the crocodile farm where there remains a bit of tropical forest. Cheaper to hire a taxi for the day than hire a car. All clothes are fakes - Ralph Lauren factory moved to Madagascar. Still some nice local makes like Harris Wilson and a great choice of tee shirts.

Le Touessrok is very nice, but very expensive. The rooms are great, as are the staff, a la carte restaurants and bars. I wasn't blown away by the main restaurant.

Never been but have been told its as dull as ditch water i had always thought it was a place i wanted to visit but it appears t is virtually couples only ,, depends what you want i guess

Did Le tousserok in 2000 for our honeymoon. Frankly other than the obvious benefits of being on honeymoon we found it hugely overrated.It's as if you've become a stepford couple where you must gaze into each others eyes for 14 days/nights or you don't get the place. The supplement restaurants were poor especially when the leftovers appeared in the main restaurant the following nights and the staff were very polite but seemed to be able to nothing other than smile. Been revamped since we went though.

Going at the end of October to stay in the Belle Mar Plage and play golf for 2 weeks, can't wait.
