Thread resurrections / long time lurkers

I sometimes come across threads which were started and finished years ago, only for someone to resurrect them years later. For example:

I know it's good form to avoid duplicating topics, but how/why do people come across ancient threads and decide to start up something again?
Another question, how come from time to time you see a first post by someone who signed up years ago? Do they just sign up and change their mind about posting, then come back a few years later?

)I was a lurker for a long time. A mate of mine used to post on here a fair bit (and still does occasionally, mainly in food, restaurants) and he recommended the place to me so I signed up years ago but only looked infrequently. Then I started reading stuff in The Lounge more regularly and couldn't resist joining in.
