Golf GTI vs Scirocco R
Discussion
Hi All,
I am not the most knowledgeable car enthusiast but follow at a low level. I am trying to decide on a new car and i am currently looking at the Golf GTI or the Scirocco R.
From what i can tell the Golf GTI is generally a better car with alot newer tech. The only driver for the Scirocco R is the looks and on paper conformance is a little better. Considering i can get either for pretty much the same price money doesn't really come into it.
Is going for the Scirocco purely on aesthetics at all justifiable? Or is the Golf GTI such a purely better car that i should not allow my heart to rule over my head!
Looking to the more knowledgeable for any advice! So thanks in advance.

Had a scirocco R hire car for 3 months and the GF has the 2.0 TSI version of the scirocco (old GTi engine)
May be partially due to winter weather but I didn't really like the R, just couldn't put the power down, at all! (but when it got going it was a good step up in performance). Also the DSG gearbox (besides the upshift farts, I love them) was annoying as it just wouldn't do as I told it to, and fairly regualrly at that. Also found it understeered like buggery, my E39 540I would go around corners fine at the speed this one had me under steering into oncoming traffic (then lift-off oversteering) away from!
The R is very well spec'ed and looks nice though, now hard to tell it apart from the R-kit versions now however.

I'm in the same situation, some cracking lease deals on both the new facelift GTI and Scirocco R means it's narrowed my choice down to these two.I am not the most knowledgeable car enthusiast but follow at a low level. Doesn't help when I've had a Golf R and would jump at it for another one. However I've picked and ordered the Rocco R based on the fact it's an R, looks nice and the reviews on it seem favourable. Plus being able to get one for September delivery helped as the GTI I was being told October delivery.
I was always worried if I picked the GTI i would be constantly trying to compare it to the Golf R and be disappointed with it even though they are two different vehicles.
Saying that the Rocco R looks very well spec'd Leather seats, Sat Nav, iPod integration however no cruise control as standard?!
Despite the facelift the Scirocco R is pretty long in the tooth. Still based on the Golf MK5 platform which is a fair way behind the current MQB based MK7 Golf. It also still uses the old EA113 engine which isn't all bad as you avoid the camchain tensioner issues of the EA888 as it's belt driven.
My choice would be the MK7 Golf GTI.

I have the R on lease at the moment and love it. Very well specced 19s, heated leather, nav pretty much everything other than cruise. I've driven the GTi,I considered it at a replacement (but managed to get a 4C, hopefully) imo it's quite a bit slower and looks boring in comparison to the R. Go drive both that's the best way.
Ive been driving the Scirocco R on lease for nearly 2 years now and have grown very fond of it. When I first took delivery, I couldnt believe I was actually driving one! Took some getting used to as it is a bit of a wild beast.
The looks are awesome , especially in white. The white sets the wheels off very nicely. Performance always gets the adrenalin rushing although 4wd would make more sense. Love the spec but yes could really do with cruise control. I always get looks when driving it.
Unfortunately they are no longer manufacturing the Scirocco , most certainly the R has stopped manufacture already and so what is available is all that is available..forever!
For this reason I had no hesitation to order another (this week) and this time for 36 months instead of my current 24 month term ending in November.
The car is already in the UK but the dealership has agreed to hold it until the end of my current lease which is great.
I get a bit bored with hearing the inevitable "its an old design/platform". It is what it is and there is nothing out there like it. The fact that its discontinued makes it even more special in my opinion and the fact its nowhere near as common as the golf makes it even better. For a change it actually looks what it can actually do which the golf (in my opinion) doesnt. Sorry
I did notice there are loads of used models appearing even as low as £20k for a 20k miles + so all is not lost if you can't get a lease now.
Proud to be driving one
Its good to keep tabs on the interest sites. 'VW Scirocco R Owners - UK' on facebook to name but a few.
