Well, it's the time of year again, when autumn's in the air and a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of dodging the mud and cowshit on the roads and aquaplaning to the next PH meeting.
So it occurred to me that I hadn't had my insurance renewal, and then it dawned that I hadn't told them I'd moved, so the papers would have gone to my old address, where She Who Must Be Avoided would undoubtedly have held a midnight cauldron-stirring session, with much cackling and sprinkling of Ear of Newt or some such in the hope that if she didn't foward the renewal, I'd get nicked for being uninsured. But I digress.
I rang up the insurers, and the premium has gone DOWN. Yes, you read it right, DOWN. Now I haven't any points, no claims, blah blah, and although the car turns 15 this month they were already treating it as a classic so that's not the reason.
So for 5000 miles F/ Comp., Prot. NCD, breakdown cover, £250 excess, they want... £369.
However, if I drop it to 3000 miles, they'll only relieve me of £268. Bargain! The 390's only done a bit more than that this year, what with winter layup and engine rebuild etc. so that's what I'm going for. Not even worth shopping around, I'd say.
Apparently the insurance companies have been taking some major hits in the last couple of years owing to the changing profile of TVR drivers generally: whereas once we were all middle-aged enthusiasts who rarely thrashed our cars, now we're ex-hot-hatch IT types with too much cash, too young and too hot-headed for our own good. So those of you who keep trashing the newer models are being subsidised by us Wedge drivers, you bastards. However, all is not lost. The prediction is that the Wedge cars are acquiring cult classic status and several instances of people having comprehensive reports produced detailing work done to the cars to justify the 'Agreed Value' has revealed a few Wedges that are almost as valuable as they were when new! As a consequence it may transpire that in a year to 18 months the Wedges will be considered in a better light than the later cars with resultant (it is to be hoped) lower premiums!! As I said.... woohoo!!
