As odd as this might sound, these cars have never made my "radar"... until now.

There seems to be a bunch of them falling into the £15,000 price band now, they look nice (to my eyes)... or are they just a baby 911? I'm not much of a Porsche connoisseur, what's the general consensus on them?

They're great cars. In many ways they're even better than a 911 as a driver's car. For example it's got a more optimal weight distribution being mid engined, 2 seats, lighter. It's more of a sports car than the 911 which is more of a GT.

However, you have to be prepared for people saying you only bought one because you couldn't afford a 911. However, all opinions of anyone how says that are safe to ignore once they've outed their ignorance.

Early 3.4 can have bore scoring issues, so the 2.7 is a safer bet. Later 987.2 cars should be a safer bet due to ongoing engine revisions.

Out of the box, much more neutral and balanced than a 911 but yeah, they don't have the cachet or pedigree of the neun elf.. Of course, in driving terms, that's nonsense and the croc is a better car, logically.

If I didn't have the 911 I bought at the time I bought it, I'd likely have thought long and hard about getting a croc, they really are a cracking car. If you find the right motor, do it, you won't regret it. They're every bit a 'proper' Porsche - arguably much more than say a 944, although I suspect I'll be branded a heretic for saying so.

Ooh, good to know, I was naturally immediately looking at the larger displacement model.

I have been looking into these very heavily for a couple of months. Possibly in a different position to yourself but for me they are affordable but near the upper echelons of my budget.

It seems as mentioned there can be a bore scoring issue with the 3.4 S and there is many internet whispers of IMS failure- leading to a completely lunched engine and a £10k bill. It seems this is far less common than the internet would lead you to believe though. Again the hearsay is the 2.7s tend not to have the issue- though the engine is the same design so I am not totally sure on that.

I am undecided myself- the car seems too good to pass on but personally am being held back by fears of running costs!

This is often the niggle!

I tend to be rather rash about considering running costs... possibly a hang over from my time running a TVR an XJR and a RR V8 at the same time... I always think "it can't be worse than that!" which is fine, until I'm actually watching the pound notes vanish... hehe

My issue now, is convincing my brain that it's in any way "OK" to opt for the smaller engine...

I've had my 2.7 Cayman (manual) from new back in 2007 & still love it as much as ever, its my wifes daily driver now & I have a 991.1 C2. As others have said the 911 is more a GT car with loads more power than a Cayman & easy to cover ground quickly. As for the Cayman you have to really work at getting the best from it & I love it for that, & even giving it a good thrashing your not going crazy fast.
Our Cayman is probably worth a 1/4 of the value of the 911, but as a fun drivers car its better by miles, in the early years we had a few road trips in it the Alps, with snow chains ready, so will cruise Ok too.
After 65000 miles had no major issues at all, its a keeper as far as we are concerned as the value is such that its worth more to me than ever.
Happy hunting, wait for the right car, mines white, on Carrera Classic 19", sports heated seats, sports steering wheel, extended leather & has held its looks really well, some colour / wheel combos can look a little dated in my view.
