Being honest, I never thought Blunkett was all that bad - he's regularly attacked in the press for calling a spade a spade..

Such is the piss-poor state of the media in this country that anyone who's attacked by their sanctimonious rottweilers can only go up in my estimation.

Carzee, are you sure you shouldn't be on the 'political correctness' thread ?

Sorry. Blunket is bonkers. ALong with the rest of his lot...but that's just IMHO, of course.

But.

I do like it when he attacks the media (they nearly always deserve it), bleeding heart liberals (who absolutely always deserve it) and whining criminals (who by definition deserve it).

Good boy. Now have a biscuit. Woof.

Hmm

'makes clear that the Home Secretary said he would welcome English being spoken at home as well as the mother tongue. He did not prescribe what should happen in people's homes and in private'

Not a bonkers view in my eyes - completely correct.

imho Blunket has lost it.
He'll be telling us what breakfast cereal to eat next.
I'll speak Klingon to my kids if I like.

I think his comments have been misunderstood, seems like more sensationalist reporting to me!

From what I've seen (news) and read, he was merely suggesting that immigrants should speak English at home to try and help integrate them into the community, rather than creating mini-ghettos in various parts of the country.

Surely if these people want to live in our country and have the same rights as us, they should at least make an effort to learn the language... thereby practicing at home.

Turn it around - my sister lives in Spain... so what did she do? She learnt the language? Why - so she could integrate into the community, rather than being "that English girl".

IMHO Blunkett's request actually seems perfectly reasonable. It is not being enforced, it was merely a suggestion.

Think of it this way - if you moved to France, would you carry on speaking only English at home, or would you try your best to practise French at every opportunity, including conversational french at home with your family.

Don't take what he has said out of context. One of our braver politicians (even if he is a lefty). Lets keep the spin out and have more substance.

If they want to ghettoize themselves, then so be it. Let them speak their own languages. But any benifit forms MUST be in ENGLISH.

Personally, I would...

elanturbo - I agree we shouldn't be told what to do in our own homes, and anyone who suggests other wise can f-off... BUT as I said, it was only a bloody suggestion.

I don't give a damn what race someone is or their background, but if you expect to be treated in a certain way, it's only right you make an effort to understand the local cultures and language. If they want a mosque (sp?) - fine, build 'em one... but they've gotta play the game and make an effort to speak English.

This is infact what he did! He suggested in the home that English should be spoken.
