Competitor Not Displaying VAT on Website Prices
Discussion
I've done a fair bit of Googling on this today but can't find a definitive answer.
A competitor is showing the headline price of the B2C products on their website excluding VAT but with no reference to VAT at all. They then add VAT at the checkout after the customer has put time into entering their address etc.. At this point many customers, albeit somewhat aggrieved, will continue with their purchase.
Could anybody involved in e-commerce provide a ink to anything definitive saying that their prices should say "exc VAT" or that they should include VAT in the displayed product price? At the very most, it appears to be regarded as misleading bad practice but is not illegal.
I should add that this competitor is based overseas, but is registered for UK VAT, and does not comply with some of the Consumer Contracts Regulations such as right to cancel in their Ts&Cs.
Your views would be appreciated.
