Anyone selling internationally via eBay?
Discussion
Is anyone regularly selling overseas on ebay, selling from the UK, either with or without the Global Shipping Programme?
The reason for asking is, essentially my UK page is being duplicated on overseas pages (as you’d expect) but the ‘free delivery’ is also being offered, which I can’t absorb.
Am I going to get hit for onward delivery from the UK GSP centre to the buyer’s overseas address because I’ve offered free delivery in the UK, and now the overseas buyers are seeing 'free delivery'?

As a private individual, I think you can still restrict where you are willing to send things to on the settings page. I'm not sure if there is a different approach to traders.
I occasionally flog off Alfa 105 parts and bits of hi-fi on eBay.
I blocked off Russia, most of non-EU Eastern Europe, Nigeria (for the usual reasons) and Italy (specifically because of problems with Italian post).

I sell a few small value items per month through GSP.
I offer free p+p to UK buyers, but you as a seller do not lose out by doing this.
When your item is listed on a foreign Ebay, there is a postage cost provided in the listing by Ebay.
When you sell your item you just post to the Global shipping address provided (with reference number) and they ship it abroad using their choice of courier.
A tracking number is usually(although not always) added by Ebay in 'My Ebay' to the sold item.
As mentioned by previous poster you can specify countries to exclude from your international sales if you wish.
The overseas costs charged by Ebay to the buyer can be expensive, although as a seller it doesn't make a difference to you other than putting off a few potential buyers.
Sometimes I receive messages asking to post directly overseas to save the buyer a large Ebay postal charge, but I have always refused to do this. If you send through Ebay it is fully tracked, and if anything goes wrong then you are covered.
I have had a few overseas buyers begin disputes due to non-delivery, but I just ask pass this on to Ebay. Every single time this has happened Ebay have refunded the buyer in full. I never lose out because Ebay confirm the item has been lost by their overseas courier.
The only cost to you is a tiny charge by Paypal which I think is down to currency conversion, but even this is tiny.
I am looking at a sale today to France which I have received 4p less in my Paypal account compared to a UK sale, on an item costing just over £7.
It can help your sales too without any major problems to you.
This month I have sold just over 40 items, and 15 have been through GSP.
Items this month have gone to France, Germany, Italy, Turkey, USA and Singapore.
Hope this rambling may help you a little.

The eBay GSP is fine, it's a depot in the UK-my local is Derby I think. I get an email confirming its arrival at the UK depot and then it's in the hands of eBay and their partners to deliver-as stated above if it doesn't arrive eBay refund from their own funds and your "money" is untouched.
I refuse to post outside of UK except using GSP too.

useful stuff
Thanks dumfriesdave, very useful and informative response, thanks for taking the time to set that out - also useful for anyone else who searches PH for ebay's GSP.The protection the GSP offers is great but I've just looked further and I think I'll be doing my customers a favour of I opt out and send direct - reason being, I can send my items worldwide for £1.17 through the Post Office. Looked into the charge made to a French customer who had to pay £8.97 for a 6g, 12x12x0.4cm delivery.
Unbelievable - maybe this is why I'm not seeing any other overseas sales. Very annoyed about ebay's greed for such an insignificant delivery volume.

I think I'm going to have to consider the risk of losses and the loss of all sales due to hugely inflated shipping costs to overseas buyers.I refuse to post outside of UK except using GSP too.
I buy a fair bit of ebay stuff, I live overseas but have a house in the UK, both addresses are on ebay and pay pal. When I log in it uses the last address I shipped to as default. If I am on using the overseas address and something is UK only it wont let me buy, and I need to go to my account and change address. if it is post free, the when I try to but it asks me to check postage before I can bid or click buy it now, so I think you are OK.

Thanks Berw, I was wondering about how the free postage aspect would be handled. I appreciate you sharing your experiences with this, could come in handy in the future (but I felt so bad for the guy who got charged £8/£9 I emailed and apologise - that was what prompted me to get out of GSP and use royal mail for a fraction of the cost).Gassing Station | Business | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
