Wouldn't a warehouse operatives contractor be better?

One bill no employment issues.

You can't just have them invoice you.

They'll invoice you for 60 x 8 x 7.5 = £3600 (days x hours per day x min wage).

Whats going to happen to their income tax or NI payments?

Its not going to fly if you're planning on saying they're self employed...

Take them on as temporary employees.

I presume your business is already registered for PAYE etc as an employer (in order to handle existing director and staff salaries/wages).

This.

We employ a lot of similar people and used to provide them the option of a PAYE or Freelance Contract. On the latter they had to sign a form saying they took responsibility for tax, NI, etc and we just paid them the hourly rate upon receipt of an invoice which we provided to them to provide to us. HMRC hauled us over the coals on it ( no fine or anything but just a threat of this if we continued).

As Eric said...short term PAYE contract.

For the hassle involved, I'd probably just go via an agency for such a short period.

Van load of romanians, once you give them the word they can be in Blighty and ready to work in 24-36hrs.

As others have said, for unskilled work in the circumstances you describe, HMRC will consider them employees so PAYE with associated benefits is the only legitimate option.

taking them on direct could be a minefield and leave you with no end of trouble from HMRC etc. Easiest solution is to employ them on a short term contract via an umbrella company -the umbrella company acts as a 100% legit payroll vehicle and takes all the hassle of the PAYE, employers liability insurance, sick pay, holiday pay etc and typically charge about £12-16 per week per person. Google umbrella company and you'll find loads of them out there.

I'd vote for an agency also... if you're any where around London or the M1 corridor to Brum I can point you to a known one if it's of any help. If you're worried about the cost of agencies, they make pennies per placement, for the hassle it'll save you on such a short term arrangement it's a no-brainer if you ask me
