Lightweight bike with disc brakes for commuting and fun

Second hand, budget £400 upwards, like the idea of lightweight bike with disc brakes that I can build and upgrade over time.

I could opt for a Boardman Team CX, either the latest or 2014, or even 2012 model - any advice on these or alternatives?

I know I'd enjoy the lightness of a carbon frame and spending a bit more... looking at the Pro SLR. I don't know much about bikes but am getting into it, and will enjoy upgrading bits over time.

Get a second-hand CX bike and ride the st out of it this autumn and winter.

Put a couple of thousand KMs on it, then you'll have a clearer idea of exactly what you want/need.

Clean up & sell on the first bike, and get another one.

Oh, and it's folly to disregard rim-braked bikes. I have mini-V brakes on my commuter and my CX rig, with Kool Stop pads. Both stop superbly in wet and dry conditions.

You could get as you say a boardman cx team, and it's not a bad bike but you'd get tired of swearing at the cable disc brakes constant fettling requirement.

Save your pennies for a second hand Pinnacle Arkose with hydraulic discs and just ride it!

You don't know abut bikes, but you know that you want a 'light weight' bike. Marketing powers are strong with bicycles.

I'd buy an old Boardman CX off the bay at £400 and run that for a year and see how you get on. Their base model fro a few years ago was quite good. SRAM apex, discs and quite a nice looking ali frame.

Definitely try to find decent hydraulic brakes rather than cables is something I have so often it must have something to it

Quite a few in my club have various flavours of cannondale synapse that they seem very pleased with
