I'm interested in a 10 year old S6 Avant so been trawling here for info. A lot of the threads on this engine are a few years old now, so was just wondering if there was any more information in light of experience. The only issue that really concerns me is carbon buildup. How much does it cost for a decoke by a specialist? Any recommendations? Anbody done DIY? How often between decokes? That kind of thing

I'd sworn off direct engines after the last couple of cars, but the S6 package is very attractive for the price.

Thankyou very much. Car is still there despite looking to be a good price! Is this a model Audi people tend to shun? (I've never had an Audi before). Looks bloody lovely to me.

I had mine for 6 to 7 years and really liked it.

In the early days the S6 was unfairly imo compared with the M5 & E55 so reviewed poorly; that combined with eye watering depreciation meant that you were a brave person to shell out for one.

Today they are an absolute bargain and surely the cheapest way into a V10?

Mine was on the whole very reliable however you will need to allow for some biggish bills each year and when the time comes to move it on it wont be an easy sell in today's mpg orientated market (mine went in PX).

Indeed. This one was PXed for a new Fiat Panda, presumably after a dry spell on the classifieds....

At £200+VAT the guy is effectively doing it for free because that alone is what 10 x injector seal kits cost.

You're looking at ~£350 inc VAT to walnut blast a 2.0 Turbo VAG GDI engine with seals, gaskets and labour. I would expect close to double that for a V10.

I was amazed it was so cheap as well however you dont need any replacement parts to take off and replace the inlet so its a pretty much labor only job. With a bit of experience i think you could have the inlet off in half an hour and back on in 45 mins if not quicker.

Still damn cheap, and the PTFE injector seals do need replacing though. I wonder if some places just pull 'em out and shove 'em back in again with the old seals?

The injectors dont need to come out; just the high pressure fuel pumps and lines so the manifold can lift off.

There is a gasket on the air distribution housing that the throttle bodies mount onto and two on the manifold but they should be reusable if carefully removed.

Ah OK, so they and the fuel rails can stay in place. That is very handy then. Wish that was the case with the 2.0 FSI engines!
