older/lower cost TVR's?
Discussion
Okay, so looking at the possibility of getting a TVR as a second car, that would mean a potential budget of [around] £6k.
So, that would really mean either a V6 S2/S3 or a wedge (V6 or V8)
Now, apart from the obvious style differences, are their any function/build differences between the two models?
Also, what are the V6's like? I'm guessing they are the Ford Essex engines - but do they have the noise? performance?

There are several Wedges and S models in this months Sprint at that sort of price. Lots of differences - although I don't know much about the S, I'm sure it had a different Chassis to the Wedges. All of the S models had trailing arm rear suspension, including the V8S. Wedges up to early '86 had a similar arrangement, but from then on had a lower wishbone set-up (referred to as A-frame) which is regarded as an improvement, especially for the higher powered cars. Later S models had cats as well, which none of the Wedges did, hence, IMHO they sound much better (louder - helped of course by the RV8). S models also have a two piece roof, whereas the Wedges have a single panel. Quicker to get on in a hurry. I belive all of the engines in the standard 280/350 and S models were as they left the Ford (Cologne engine)/Rover factories, save for better exhaust manifolds and higher flow air filters, so c. 165 bhp for the V6 and c. 195 for the V8. You could sdo worse than check out Steve Heaths excellent books on each of these models.

If I was getting a V6 - I'd go earlier than S2/3 say 3000M or Taimar - should get a restored or really good one for that price that sit in th 4 - 7k range.
Essex for these - Cologne fo rthe S2/3's.
Or if you want to be different a 2500M (Triumph TR6 / Saloon engine) alot of scope for mods with these, as with the Essex. 2500M have a slightly meaner bonnet though - I stuck one on my 3000 when I smacked the from.

All depends on where you are in the country, have a look at the TVRCC web site, click on regions at teh top and see where and when your local meet is. There should also be contact details for the local organiser (RO) who may know of other meets going on as well. Join the club whislt you're at it too

On the engine front, the S Series (1,2 & 3) all used the Cologne, not the Essex.
I'll think you'll find the S1 used the Essex engine
I think you'll find it didn't. The essex went out of production around 1980. All the V6 wedges used the Cologne, never mind the S's.

i agree its a cologne engine and after a shotgun ride today in an S around Donnington, i have seen them in a new light

If you want further reading ref Wedges you should drop into www.tvrwedgepages.co.uk where you can learn all you need to know about the various models.
The V6 sound gorgeous but a big bad wedge sounds awsome at low revs and down right demonic above 5k!!!
But then I am a little biased.
But whatever you decide do try as many as you can before you buy.

I think there may be some confusion here between the 2.8 engine used in the S1 and the 2.9 used in S2 onwards (and I believe some transitional S1.5)
The S1 used the 2.8 with K-Jetronic mechanical injection and a pretty basic Ford electronic ignition. The heads had siamesed exhaust ports.
The 2.9 was a developed version with redesigned heads that had individual ports. It featured L-Jetronic (or Ford's version of it) electronic injection.
Never actually saw the 2.9 referred to as a Cologne though. Always just called 'the 2.9' IIRC.

Or in short the S & M models are OK for the shy retiring type but if you want to really experience Blackpool Rock and Roll it has to be a Wedge, after all BBSMF sounds like a Smurf meeting.
