I have absolutely no intention of purchasing now or in the near future a 4k HDR TV, however we want to get a PS4. No problem buying a Pro, but if it's only going to be an advantage if we have 4k which we don't, is there any point? Our 52 inch LCD TV is perfect and has too much life in it to get shot just now.

Also any pointers on PS4 exclusives that are any good? I have been firmly an Xbox user for many years, and will probably purchase the new one when it's out later in the year. Cheers!

There are advantages but they're much smaller. Some games will downsample the image back to 1080p for increased quality, or run at a higher frame rate or rendering quality at 1080p. If you're thinking about PSVR then it's a no brained IMO.

I'd probably say buying fresh it's worth it, it's less than £100 difference from memory?

According to this link the Pro will give a slightly better picture quality because it's downsampling 4k to 1080, it has an extra USB port and an optical audio port that aren't on the Slim. Other than that the benefits depend on the game http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13100...

Nope. No separate games. Only marginal improvements for stuff like VR. It would be a complete and utter waste of money.

A few games have PS4 Pro enhancements, and the Pro has a feature called "Boost Mode" which attempts to improve the performance of games that haven't had any specific patches for the Pro. Bloodborne for example, has a better frame rate.

I upgraded mine to a Pro for no other reason than for increased performance, and increased potential performance. Currently playing Witcher 3 and recently found out that the developer is planning to release a patch that targets it.

If you can afford it, and are not sacrificing anything else, then I'd say go for it.

I have a PS4 Pro and only a 1080p tv.

I have no regrets buying it at all. Console gaming is basically quite cheap in the hardware department costs anyway so I just bought the best one as soon as it was available. It is good to know you are getting the best picture and quality available to me on my 1080p limited tv. Less risk of slow down on certain games and so on.

If it is within financial grasp, I would buy the Pro and just get on with it and not look backwards.

"complete and utter waste of money" is probably a bit too strong a statement to be taken seriously.

Thanks all. I can afford the Pro without issue, however the TV will be sticking around for at least 3-4 years, by which time the PS4 will probably be replaced entirely anyway. I'll see what deals are about with both and go from there. Game are currently doing the normal PS4 with 4 games for £229.99, which is decent enough. I really want to play Uncharted 4.

Depends on your point of view, the extra system power will allow CPU/GPU heavy games to run smoother with fewer stalls / slowdown. The extra memory will also allow for larger texture pools to aid texture streaming.

Personally I think HDR makes a bigger difference than 4k, but its still a bit of a wild west at the moment in regards to HDR quality and standards.

Given we're deep into the lifecycle of the PS4 is it not smarter to hold off for the PS5 or the next gen Xbox/Atari?

PS5? I'd imagine you'll be waiting a while, given the user base of the PS4 at the moment, its got plenty of life in it yet.

XB1X is a great piece of hardware, so if the MS exclusive titles are your thing then I'd certainly consider holding out the few months till it launches.
