PCM / PSM options on a boxster S
Discussion
Does any one have any experiences of the +'s and -'s of PSM and whether its worth having as an option. Is it fair to say its the porsche equivalent of ESP (or yaw control or whatever the varient is)...I'm not a maniac or anything, but wondering if the assurance factor is worth while? Piece of mind etc..
Also, the PCM module, in relation to the sat nav, any good or better to get an aftermarket unit? Looking to buy probably a 2 year old car and dont really want to hack it about unless i have to...
Assistance appreciated....test drove an S recently.....i'm hooked...The BM's for sale... ;->

PSM is now standard on the new Boxster and Boxster S. I wouldn't be without it anyway. See previous threads in Porsche and Boxster forums for more info.
Wouldn't bother with PCM for Sat Nav. I'd pay three or four hundred quid and get a pda with built in GPS. Works great, and can use the pda for other stuff. Can also get free software and databases (no subscription required) to give speed camera warnings. I've got a Mitac Mio 168 + Tom Tom Navigator 3 and I'm pleased with it.

Just re-read your post and seen that you intend to buy used. I spent a while looking for a dark blue Boxster S with PSM but gave up in the end and decided to buy new. At the time, I mainly wanted PSM because my girlfriend doesn't have much experience of driving powerful rear wheel drive cars. But now I keep it switched on all the time and to be honest it only cuts in on the road if I over egg things and badly misjudge a corner or traction etc (only happened once or twice).
I even keep it on on track days. I aim to drive quickly, but smoothly, so try to keep on the verge of PSM cutting in, but when I do get carried away it's nice to know that it's there if ever I end up heading towards the Armco.

finding a couple of year old model with these options on is fairly hard, there are a few out there, but main stealers appear to ramp this up to a premium, i've seen 2001 S's with tip and pcm for the tail end of 29k with about 40k miles on the clock....On the other hand some of the indie's do appear to have some good deals...just a matter of time......I'd say I'm a safe but at times, "enthusiastic" driver whose driven rear wheel drive on various models for a few years, although nothing as powerful as the S....
I dont want something thats over nannying but kinda like the last bastion before the armco is coming closer and closer ;->?

probably if the truth be told going to use the boxster as i'm guessing porsches marketing people are hoping will happen, a stepping stone up to a 911..... ease myself into the power etc...
PSM sounds a bit of a brown trouser moment saver ;->

PSM is a total must. You would be foolish to buy a car without it if there is a choice.
It does NOT nanny the driver. But it does step in and help save the day once things get over-exciting!
