In many cases there is a genuine underlying medical issue which causes developmental issues where a child struggles in a specific act of the conventional curriculum, i.e has trouble reading, had trouble interacting socially etc etc. In the past these issues where more likely to go undiagnosed and dismissed as the child simply not being that book-smart.

With that being said I think many diagnoses nowadays are the result of parents looking very hard for an excuse as to why their child does not do well in conventional education, as it doesn't suit everybody (aforementioned 'not book-smart' issue is still true to this day in many cases).

Do schools get more money for kids with special needs? I seem to recall a colleague nearly had his son 'labelled' in some way which was entirely unnecessary. His missus put a stop to it as she works with kids in the NHS and provided the school with a load of research and case studies which showed their assessment to be nonsense but there was definitely some insinuation that the school benefits by having lots of special needs kids.

Sorry I can't give much more on this and happy to accept I might be talking out of my hat.

Yes, schools do get more money for kids with 'special needs'. Therefore, they fall over themselves to get as many 'special needs' kids on role. They are just seen as a cash cow.

Sometimes I think it's just because there has to be a reason for everything these days and mitigates personal responsibility from the child, teacher or parent.

Very true. Now they are testing kids from 2. Mapping their progress against others where a supposedly typical child should be what they should be doing at any age etc... and if they aren't then there must be something wrong with them! Or they might just not be doing what the so called experts think they should be that month. We all develop at different rates let kids be kids don't test them or label them.

They should be identified, labelled and given a certain amount of extra or special attention in order for them to get the correct help and the schooling they need.
What they shouldn't be doing is putting them in classes with other pupils who want to get on if they are disruptive, are you sure this is happening?
When I was at school yobs did disrupt classes and spoil it for others, sounds like not much has changed....

Conclusion? Lack of budget as per.....

My sister moved schools and they picked up she was struggling with certain things. Turns out she is dyslexic and has slight autism. She let me read her report and a lot of it rang true with me. They've put things in place for her and shes getting on brilliantly now.

Through work I got tested for dyslexia and dyspraxia. I have both. It explains a lot. I don't go around telling everyone, just those that need to know (line manager and close colleagues).

Was it a private school by any chance?

A mate of mine is a head at one in London. Everyone has some form of special needs..

Label = more time in exams for Tilly to get 15 A*

Schools playing the game.

In our day where kids really "taught to behave" ?

Or were they they just ignored and considered naughty?

This. A lot seems to be the continuation of the fact no one can possibly held responsible for their own actions or lack of in many cases, so a label suits rather than the fact they're just a lazy fking parent who plonks their kid in front of a TV and does nothing with them.

Yeah, my eldest nephew was the same growing up in the U.S. He only needs to be told something once, not repeated, as it was in his first school. He graduated from Uni with a double first majoring in Business and Economics, and a minor degree in Spanish.

His younger brother, however, has Autism. He's 13 but hasn't yet reached 3rd grade at school. He's a good lad, so long as you know his routines and how to react to his many questions. Remember Roger Logic from Viz? Yeah, that's my younger nephew, except he's 5'8" and as strong as an Ox!

Autism as a whole has so many levels on the spectrum. I suspect many more people are affected than even they may think.

Astounding that all this labelling came about since the vast increase in media in the home!

Not true. You're forgetting the middling kids who didn't and will never make any impression on the world. They may as well have just been grey balloons. I believe a lot of those kids go on to work in financial services.
