I have an S6 V10 itch
Discussion
Morning all,
As per title, I'm drawn to a 5.2 S6 and I'm interested in your thoughts or experience.
Currently running an S4 with 4.2 V8 and can't decide whether I run it into the ground over the next few years (currently on 122k miles) or let it go now and look at an S6.
I'm going to need a new clutch soon and there are a few cosmetic issues needing dealt with.
Is there going to be much of a performance difference between the S4 and the S6?
I'm guessing running costs/maintenance will be greater for the S6?
Having owned the S4 for 4+ years now, it doesn't feel as rapid as it actually is and it still feels a wee bit cramped. The 4's a saloon but would prefer the 6 as an Avant.

Biggest challenge is finding an S6 - they're much rarer than the RS version as those with the cash to buy new weren't put off by the price difference compared to the relatively similar running costs.
They clearly are very different in terms of outright performance (S6 to RS6) and the S6 is unlikely to feel significantly quicker than an S4 due to body weight difference. If Avant wasn't a requirement I'd suggest an S8 instead, as at least you get more toys as part of the equation (although many S8s are low spec too)
If the extra time would bring a C7 S6 into budget with the 4.0 V8 I'd look in that direction - none of the age related faults common to the V10 C6 which RS owners just about manage to justify the expense of fixing, but might sour an S6 rather quickly!

There aren't many around at all, only 5 or 6 V10's on autotrader over the weekend.
I was more minded to do the V10 thing just so I could say I've owned a V10 and to hell with the environment. Childish attitude but I like the grunt from the V8 and wondered if ther would be more from the V10.
Maybe time for a re-think.
Thanks for your input.

I ran mine for around 6/7 years and only changed recently as I'm back commuting and my car allowance stipulates a max age.
In all those years I would say the biggest expense excluding fuel was front brakes and tyres. I had a few faults over the years but nothing serious; the biggest problem was tracing them as the cars fairly complex.
For me the pick of the options is keyless entry and go.
The S6 is without doubt a flawed car in many ways and very much a point and squirt blunt instrument however it certainly got under my skin. I say go scratch that itch.

@barryrs - am I right in thinking the common coolant pipe and oil pump seal faults are common to both S and RS? Not sure if they're an easier fix on the S due to lack of turbos and pipework, if so? I know on the RS they're very much age related faults and can run well into 4 figures to sort
I dont think so Adrian.
The engines in the S6 & RS6 are actually very different. The RS6 engine is very much the 5.0 Lambo engine however the 5.2 in the S6 was re-engineered to suit the Audi production line and as such shares very little with the RS.
Im not aware of either of those faults on the S6; common problems that i am aware of are the cyclonic oil separating valve and a breather valve under the inlet manifold thats a pain to get to.

When I bought mine I had to travel 200 miles as there were naff all available. Seemed to be more RS6s available but a lot more expensive.I was more minded to do the V10 thing just so I could say I've owned a V10 and to hell with the environment. As barry said biggest expensive is petrol, then tyres and brakes. Mine eats brake pads and seems to need new disks every other pad change. Its only £500 for the fronts disk and pads so not huge. Shop around for tyres. I got the Toyo Proxies AO for £600 fitted for 4. I have seen them even cheaper that that in the past too.
Its not a perfect car, but its fun as hell. I can be a relaxed A6 with big comfy seats or a beast that can beat a lot of things away from the lights.
The V10 is a nice engine, btu the exhaust is too quiet. You need a miltek or a cheaper option is to delete the resonators.
Bit of a thread resurrection prompted by this facelift S6 I've seen on Autotrader recently. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...
Looks to be good value for a facelift C6. If you could get it for closer to £9k, it would be a veritable bargain.
I've had two in the past. A saloon and an avant. Both high mileage, both trouble free. No other costs apart from routine servicing and brakes and tyres.
I'm currently in a D4 A8 with a tuned 3.0 tfsi engine. It's fast and comfortable but a little bit big for city centre driving. that's why I was looking at getting back into an S6...
