Sound snags, help req'd please.
Discussion
Hi Folks,
I disconnected my speakers and subwoofer yesterday.
upon reconnection, my stored music isn't right. Everyone sounds like a smurf. The speed is correct, but the tone too high. Can't understand it.
Other things that come through the speakers are ok, such as the ph video's but not the library music.
Help gratefully received, I never liked the smurfs.

removing the speakers wont have any affect on the software on the PC, so its either a physical connection issue (check all wiring, try using some headphones etc)
if it still boinks, then its a case of checking your system settings.. but if other music is ok...
try playing a CD..
Media player DOES have the ability to speed up music.. try using a different program.

Have you tried with headphones?
it could theoretically be possible that the card was damaged if you were playing music thru it, without speakers connected.. but that would seem a little far fetched on modern kit.
one option is to remove your soundcard drivers in Device Manager (Control Panel...system...hardware...devicemanager)
Just goto the Sound and Audio Controllers, find the soundcard, right click, properties.. drivers..
then either rollback, or uninstall.
Then let it reboot, and it shoud autodetect it (if you uninstalled) and reinstall the drivers.. use ones from CD if you have them.

what are playing the sounds in when the problem occurs? It could be a sound effect has been applied which is distorting the pitch making it sound high and squeaky. Try another program such as winamp.
Failing that, it could be that you have a problem at the driver level, what make/model is the PC?

Sounds to me like a fancy sound effect has been applied by some application or other.
Try probing in:
Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio (Top tab)
Then click on advanced in the "Sound Playback" bit.
See if any "Extra Settings" appear there.
Your sound card driver/software may have some stupid tools that allow you to add silly effects (why you would need them is beyond me!)
I'm assuming Win XP here by the way....

How frustrating!
I get the feeling it will be one of those "If I am sat in front of the PC, I could sort it in a couple of minutes!" type of problems.
Yes I bet that is the case......I reckon it's something like a sliding bar that has upped the voice tone....but I have fiddled with the play speed, that is ok, funny but the music is at the right speed, but sounds like the singer has his knackers in a nutcracker.
Are there any programmes in your programme list that are related to the sound card options?
Look in Start -> All Programmes
And see if there are any audio "utilities" that may affect the sound coming out of the PC.
Also, where are you based? There may be a PH'er who could pop their head in and have a look (for the price of a pint!)
D'oh! Should have looked at the profile!
Bristol..... that rules me out I'm afraid!
