2009 MK6 Golf 1.4 GT TSI 160
Discussion
Hello
Began hunting for said car, luckily I had found one at a local car garage down the road.. The exact car, was very nice. Test drove it, loved it. Paid deposit as had to wait for funds to come through. Next day went again to show girlfriend, another test drive. She was impressed, very nice car.
Friend of mine works at Legit VW garage and is quite high up, he pulled a full history check that VW log of everything done to vehicles, he said its history is flawless, looks like a little gem and recommended I buy it (No custom to him at all so wasnt trying to get a sale out of me).
Day came and I collected the car. It is a RAC Approved garage so they have to go through RAC Inspections, new services and new MOT's, comes with 6 months platinum warranty and 12 months breakdown.
1st Day of driving I was very happy but a little unsure about the little bit of vapour I could see coming out the rear...... I asked many people about this and majority were telling me it has probably just been sitting a while and needs a good drive to clean it out........ So taking the advice on board, after work I went the long way home and gave it a good drive...... After 15 minutes it started whistling..... Then loss of power....... Turbo had blown!!!!!!! First day I had it, not even 12 hours.... turbo blown!
RAC come out confirmed its turbo, took it back to garage and it is getting replaced... but because of this I feel abit uneasy about it... I love the car to bits and I want to keep it and hope its my perfect little ride but after reading the internet I have found too much negative comments about it that has me feeling unsettled..... I do know that people only complain on the internet, not many people bother to go online and compliment things they enjoy, only usually to complain so I am aware that you are going to find majority of negatives not positives... but still has me feeling concerned..... I want some advice and opinions
- Sorry for long post, please take time to read and help me though*

That would be the perfect outcome, positives are its got good history, serviced and oil changed every year on log book. All MOT passed except one but was something silly, coming my way it has had a new MOT again so full year, new service, RAC Inspected put on new disc brakes and something else that I cannot read the writing so anyway after that, passed the RAC Inspection too.
Now its going to have a new Turbo which was a nightmare of it going but I suppose its a good thing its gone now rather than later without warranty, fingers crossed it was a one off issue and after this it is a little gem.... I mean its got 85000 miles so it must not of suffered from some of the negative comments about this model to still be going, surely?
Negatives are, well firstly the fact the turbo has just blown on day 1. Having 85000 miles is quite high I suppose... so maybe more problems are to come?
The issues reading online such as the engines are too fast for their size, twin supercharged turbo on a 1.4 is too much for it to cope.... cracked pistons etc
What are your thoughts on all the above comments? Please rectify anything untrue or not quite true, is 85000 too high mileage?

This is what exactly happened
I was driving it and it started making this noise whenever I had my put on the acceleration What a blown turbo sounds like - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGhmm2RGUEI
Lasted no longer than 5 minutes until that noise stopped... Now it just sounds like air blowing? Significant loss in power, tonnes of smoke..... Turbo = 100% knackered

My daughter's 2010 Golf had issues with the turbo when she bought it, several years ago. This week, the turbo blew again.
I regret to say that VW are a very long way from the quality cars they purport to be. Google Golf turbo issues and see how prevalent it is.
I wouldn't entertain any VAG car after Dieselgate, their failure to buy back cars when America forced them to ( plus buy backs in Germany) and now alleged price fixing.
Frankly, they are not exactly trustworthy or reliable.

Thanks guys, that is what I want to hear I guess. It was just bad luck and unfortunate and after this brand new turbo being fitted, I can hopefully enjoy the car again.
On another forum someone pointed out that I should insist on having the sump taken out and checked for sludge, apparently new oil can release debris and mess the turbo up? The turbo is always the first casualty apparently. I have passed the info onto the garage, not sure what they will make of it or do anything about the request.
Any of you know anything about this, whether or not any truth to it?

About the only thing related to that is that some other VW engines (the 1.8T in particular) can suffer from lack of oilchanges and lots of short trips leading to sludge partially blocking the pickup in the sump. Sludge problems are unlikely if the car has been serviced up to the mark and used for more than just nipping to the corner shop. 85k on a 2009 car doesn't suggest lack of use, that's an average of 30 miles a day, every day, since new.
There's always some debris in the quieter corners of an engine, replacing the oil doesn't disturb that. Also, the oil is picked up from the sump, -filtered-, then circulated through the engine.
You could ask the garage to drop the sump and check, about an hour's work with it in the air, but they may well ask you to pay for the labour to do it.
Top Tip - stop reading internet horror stories.
It's understandable, but you've got a warranty which has already stumped up for a major repair without quibble.
Edit - found "the other thread", with it's doom-and-gloom over complexity. Stripping the engine down to check pistons? Sorry, but no wonder you got laughed at.

I really am clueless mate, always been a computer person, never with cars unfortunately so I am on my own in all of this, my dad sadly admits he is outdated with knowledge with these newer cars now so isnt too much help, no disrespect to him, so yeah I am on my own and all I have for help is the internet... which can be a bad idea :-(
So they are probably going to replace with a brand new turbo and just give it straight back, I was told the old damaged turbo was sucking in oil so would it be common sense that new oil will need to be added, surely they would do that for me.
So when I get it back is there any tips you can give me to keep this vehicle in top condition, from daily driving to monthly/year maintenance etc? Any tips from knowledgeable people are more grateful than you can imagine, I dont want to learn the hard way if you know what I mean... :-)

Use it. Things like sticky brakes are caused by under-use more than anything else.
Drive it - pottering at 20mph in top gear is counterproductive. Engines haven't needed to be driven that way since the 1950s.
Monitor it - tyre pressures and condition. Oil level. Coolant level. Lights. Wipers. General look underbonnet. Any weird noises that weren't there last week. Nothing complex there, and even checking these puts you ahead of 90% of people.
Maintain it - service to the year\mile intervals without fail (additional oil changes won't hurt, but are of less value these days as the oils used are far more long-lived than previous eras.). Find a decent non-dealership garage - almost any large town has a "vw specialist". Ask around for recommendations.
In general, cars are more reliable than they've ever been, despite the staggering increases in complexity. The days of a 80k mile car being fit only for crushing are long gone. One final tip,
Be wary of free advice. It's worth precisely what you've paid for it.
