I have Power of Attorney for my Mam and when listing her assets I came across a small number of shares in one of the electric companies worth around a grand.

I would like to cash them in while the markets are high but have no idea how to do that?

I'd like to do it as easily and cheaply as possible - how do i go about this please ?

Take a good look at whatever correspondence you have. Many companies offer a service through which private investors can sell their shares for a reasonable, if not market leading, charge. It is likely that this route will be the easiest to navigate in terms of paperwork etc as opening an account with any form of broker is (frankly) such a ball-ache.

Don't go to the bank/building society. They over charge and you have to wait to see what price you're getting.
You can sign up quite easily with one of the on-line brokers, and then deal instantly (you'd need to send the shares to them first so they show up in the online account. I use TD Direct, and the first three months trading cost is £6 for trades up to £100k
