Singapore Grand prix - Short notice holiday thoughts
Discussion
Evening all,
I recently split up with my wife (a horrible experience but was my decision so my fault and something I feel terrible about). Anyway I haven't had a holiday since February and I've been throwing myself into work for the past 5 months but I feel like I need to get away soon, though the thought of a week or two away by myself is a little depressing and scary though I travel around with Work on my own a fair amount so it's not like I am not used to my own company.
I'm thinking mid September.
My shortlist;
1.) Iceland - Never been but always wanted to and thought I could tour around the island.
2.) Lisbon & Portugal in general - Never seen Lisbon and I like the idea of a city visit with the possibility of a few days on a beach somewhere to relax.
3.) Singapore - Literally thought about it tonight as I could tie in with the Formula 1, never been to an F1 race (I watch on TV) but figured the Singapore circuit may be a good one to see in person given the night time element etc, and presumably I could take in some time to see the city and possibly Malaysia whilst over there, although its a long way to go for a week or even ten days.
I've taken a precaution of booking two nights over the F1 weekend using loyalty points which I can easily cancel with no charges. figured it was worth doing given the F1 could limit availability.
Interested to know what other peoples thoughts/ experiences are with these locations.

I've spent 4 days in Iceland, and if you're after a short break then it's near unbeatable. A long weekend would allow you to see nearly all of the sights (golden triangle, blue lagoon and potentially the ice field where die another days car chase was filmed).
That said, otherwise pretty poor for car related stuff, empty straight fairly open roads and all
Best of luck with the other stuff though!!

Only GP I have done is the Singapore one , and have to say it is a cracking weekend. Not cheap , as everyone really bumps up their prices to cash in. The music really makes it special .
I'm no longer really a fan of anything F1 to be honest, however can definately recommend it to do at least once in your lifetime.

Go to Singapore. You'll have a great time.
Maybe tie in a flight up to Malaysia or Thailand too - Air Asia are good and dirt cheap.
Yep, Singers would get my vote too, I love the place.Maybe tie in a flight up to Malaysia or Thailand too - Air Asia are good and dirt cheap.
I'd second Air Asia as well, flew with them from Sing for a weekend in KL, flight cost was less than £50 return
I booked flights last night to Kuala Lumpor with a view to spending a couple of nights there, then on to Bangkok, Singapore, then Pa Nang (sp?)
Flights to KL from heathrow were £440, the other flights are all in the region of £50. I can't wait.
This is for the weekend after GP weekend

Singapore !
I'm about to book for the F1 for the 4th time. Wasn't planning to, but saw they still had tickets for 3 day walkabout and decided to go again
Cheap to get around on MRT (book a hotel close to a station) - can be pricey to eat/drink but some good value places if you know where to look.

If you like modern cities Sing is OK, but no history, personally I try to avoid the place, but if you like shopping and themed pubs it your place. The idea of getting Sing and Malaysia F1 back to back was so you could come from Europe and do both, but of course the 2 week gap put an end to that.
Air Asia is fantastic but to get from Sing to KL use a bus, Aero line is the best it goes city center to city center, so it is actually faster than the plan, no baggage limit no check in, recliner seat food and toilet on board. You can get a good deal on hotel at each end, the KL hotel is the Corus, its a business style 3/4 star, but 100m from the entrance to the Twin Towers.

Cheers for the replies chaps.
I have just booked a 3 day premier walkabout, figured I could head down on Saturday to try a few locations and try and pick the best locations for the race day. I paid 508 Singapore Dollars for the tickets which according to today's rate means a round £287, I booked through the Singapore Website (just hope the tickets are there when I go to collect!).
I've already booked into a holiday inn at Orchard City (Free using my points) for the Saturday and Sunday night, might book into an intercontinental for the Monday night and fly back on Tuesday.
I'm thinking I will fly out the weekend before, See Kuala Lumpar (again I should be able to get hotels for free) for a few days then go to one of the islands off the east coast of Malaysia for 2-3 days for some relaxing before heading to Singapore.
Just trying to decide whether to treat myself and fly business class. Qatar have good economy rates (£500 return) but I have found business class from various European cities for £1400 return (a big increase I know but I've never flown business class) and could combine it with a day in somewhere like Oslo.
