Fast tow cars for 25k?

OP, given that big torque has to be a plus point for towing, what about something like a 535d? Or is a derv out of the question? That said, the Audi probably has torque aplenty.

What's the weight of your tow car + trailer?

What do you consider to be fast?

You want be able to take the trailer into the outside lane of Motorways, is that a problem for you?

Have you checked to see if the S4 is homologated for towing?


It might well be powerful enough, but I know some M cars and AMGs were never homologated.

I'm well aware of the rules of towing already.

I'm not that opposed to a derv, but I'm replacing an X3 which I hate - I want something that's at least a bit fun when not towing.

The BMW 6cly derv is a peach of an engine.

With a good remap, they're plenty fun, the auto box is brilliant too.

There's really not much out there.
335d x-drive will do 60 in 5s and would make a good tow car, but it's diesel.

Other than that, you're into SUV territory and may have to find an older / higher mileage car than you'd like (you do not specify).

If you want a petrol / car, then Audi is the way forward. In general, 'fast' petrol cars are not approved for towing.

In fact I went onto auto trader, put sub 5 secs to 60, estate and petrol under 25k

That brought up, M5, last gen e63, v10 RS6, many many RS4, c63

You should obviously check out the rating for the car and know the loaded weight of the trailer you are towing. Rule of thumb I use is that the loaded trailer should be less than 75% of the towing capacity of the car. Don't forget tongue weight also..the downward pressure on the car if for any reason it is not properly balanced.

I see the XF-R cited, but don’t think it was homologated, looking at the facelift 2012/13 saloons with 510bhp...

ETA, and if not, what else closer to 20k is quick and can tow (and is not diesel), 4+ doors.
