New 991.2 GTS or 3 to 4 year old Turbo S ?
Discussion
Hi,
Probably been discussed on other posts but more relevant now as the purchase price is around the same.
Do I purchase a new 991.2 GTS with a reasonable spec that costs £107k or go for a Turbo S around 63 / 14 plate with 10k - 15k mileage ???
Intention is to buy with a balloon payment after three years so this adds another factor into the decision as depreciation on the three year old car compared to the six year old Turbo S may make quite a difference
For's and against's please ?

For me, having just driven back to back a .2 GTS and Turbo S, I have to say that the GTS is a fair nicer place to be what with the interior and mode switch, I also prefer the power delivery of the GTS believe it or not, and the shape of the GTS. Also the information system is far better.
I've owned a 991.1 GTS and from what I hear the .2 is so much quicker. I think if it were me, I'd go brand new GTS and spec my own car.
I also think you'll do well on depreciation over the next 2 to 3 years with it being a GTS. Maybe lose 15-17k which isn't too bad in the scheme of things. I base that on mine being 105k new in Jan 2015 and was worth about 90k beginning of this year as trade in from Porsche. Prices have softened slightly since then but not much. Depreciation on the new one will prob be similar?

With the new 991.2 being now turbo imo makes turbo models a little less colourful and especially as 991.2gts comes in 2wd got to be more fun vs 4wd turbo model even with less power so I would take new 991.2gts 2wd over 4 year old 991.1 turboS

Hi had the same dilemma, but I've missed having a manual so there was only one option GTS. Love the car!
Plus the GTS sounds better, I don't know why they don't have a noisy exhaust button on the turbo, puts me off owning one as well, wouldn't fit an after market one due to warranty issues.

my feeling is that the Turbo S has less risk of big depreciation at same money over a 3 year period, mainly thanks to already having lost a good chunk. Would probably be a little careful - bake a good buffer in - banking on the glacial depreciation of the last few years going forward given that Brexit will hit over the 3 year period and best as I can tell the performance of the UK economy is already not great.
The turbo s was disappointing in h noise front but I am sure you c annout a sports exhaust on it and it won't invalidate the warranty
However remover the turbo S is the top of the range and rare and faster. Therefore I would far rather it over A gts. Anyway all 911 normal models including gts are now turbo so I don't get the argument !

Be interesting to know how the finance people price the two cars. Have you asked your OPC to put together a finance package for both ? Probably been discussed on other posts but more relevant now as the purchase price is around the same.

The Turbo S used to be far more desirable as it was more limited in numbers and as such the older models are now quite sought after - 996's and 997's. The issue with 991 is that the Turbo S was sold in greater numbers over the standard turbo.
If depreciation is your main focus then I reckon both are a good bet. If you're getting a Turbo S I'd go black and a well spec'd car.
GTS's are less sensitive to colour but the £4500 interior option is vital imo for resale having owned one as is rear wiper delete and bose.

facing the same dilemma myself. specced a nice gts to around 112-114k. offered a discount by a dealer but holding out for more. will just shop around / hold on for some time as in no rush for the car. for those taking finance, if the car is delivered next year, how can you lock in with the rates on offer now?
from what i can gather, a .2 gts will be nice as you can rev it out past 7k, in gear 50-75 times are only very marginally slower than a turbo and turbo s which is where you will feel it real world (i think around 0.4 secs), the body being cleaner and smoother shape wise also works well, not to mention being able to spec one yourself.
a .2 carrera s was ultra sharp on the throttle response and the sound mega with added turbo spool and waste gate noises. presume the gts will be even nicer.
not going to go with alcantara personally as can't see the appeal personally after spending time in a .1 gts. not tried a turbo or a TS but may do so at a pec day once i have put my deposit down.

I not saying a GTS is slow but it wouldn't know which way a turbo s went. The turbo is brutal - especially in the summer we been having recently. The push to pass button is just ridiculous. The pccbs, 4WD, 4WS, torque vectoring etc make the drive confidence inspiringfrom what i can gather, a .2 gts will be nice as you can rev it out past 7k, in gear 50-75 times are only very marginally slower than a turbo and turbo s which is where you will feel it real world (i think around 0.4 secs), the body being cleaner and smoother shape wise also works well, not to mention being able to spec one yourself.

However the GTS looks better, sounds better and handles very well. The lure of new and personalised car for many beats secondhand - even if it is the Turbo S with an OEM exhaust.

Interesting that you got offered a discount ! I don't think there's any way I'd be able to get that with my OPC. Although I do wonder if cars are "flying off the shelves" quite like our OPC's would have us believe. A couple of PH'ers managed to buy 991.2 GTS's that OPC's had ordered for stock and my OPC has just got another one in as a showroom/stock car. Cheib said:

I have just had an indication from alternative finance to Porsche that with a 10% deposit and balloon after three years on the same price car is as follows:GTS - £60k
Turbo S - £43k
Therefore they see the Turbo S depreciating at £17k more than the GTS which I think has made my mind up

I presumed that there would be no discount on the GTS? Where is your nearest OPC? Mine is Nottingham Fokker said:

Spec I like as follows:
GT Silver, PDK, GTS Interior Pack with Silver stitching, Bose, Glass Sunroof, Parking Sensors Front & Rear, Silver Seat Belts
Anything obvious I haven't considered?

That's a very nice spec and GT silver is a great colour for the GTS. I personally don't like the rear wiper as for me it ruins the lines and the back end of the car. Plus when I had mine I never had a use for it. The Cayman doesn't come with the option so why have it on the 911? I suppose as an everyday car, winter driving etc then occasionally wiping the rear screen might be useful but athestically it doesn't do it for me especially on the more sporting models.Spec I like as follows:

you just have to push imo. had a call from another OPC yesterday, called me up and said all allocations are full so no discounts available. I said okay fair enough. they then said, let me know if there is anything we can do, I said well really I want to order the car but if all your allocations are taken, not much you can.then changed tone and said, oh we can take a deposit as allocations do open up from time to time but as they are over subscribed there is no discount. all balls & contradictions imo. they just play a game. first thing they probably learn in training is that no one needs a porsche but wants one, so either way eventually the buyer will roll over. even when you go in there and they take your details, they never call you back, but its deliberate. waiting for you to make the first move.
in all honesty the games take the fun out of buying a new car. would be easier just to come clean and say look, we make £15k profit on each car, these are our overheads etc so not much left for us. personally don't begrudge anyone making a profit and most people who buy these cars I suspect will be in business in one way or another so as long as the profit is deemed fair then we carry on.

Cardiff OPC had 3 unsold GTS' in the showroom last time I was there about a week ago. There were good discounts to be had on the.1 model I seem to remember so I don't see why this time around things would be any different.then changed tone and said, oh we can take a deposit as allocations do open up from time to time but as they are over subscribed there is no discount. all balls & contradictions imo. they just play a game. first thing they probably learn in training is that no one needs a porsche but wants one, so either way eventually the buyer will roll over. even when you go in there and they take your details, they never call you back, but its deliberate. waiting for you to make the first move.

So on a new car spec of £107k what do you think is a reasonable discount if any? The OPC do a very good job of not really showing their cards, I am very near to paying my £5k build slot and after that there is no real opportunity to haggle a better deal.then changed tone and said, oh we can take a deposit as allocations do open up from time to time but as they are over subscribed there is no discount. all balls & contradictions imo. they just play a game. first thing they probably learn in training is that no one needs a porsche but wants one, so either way eventually the buyer will roll over. even when you go in there and they take your details, they never call you back, but its deliberate. waiting for you to make the first move.

I did consider getting two different prices / deals from different OPC but it turns out my two local ones are of the same group.
