thinking of wrapping mine, titanium stuff is supposed to be a lot better than the old fibreglass stuff?

I thought someone did a quite comprehensive write up not too long ago but can't find anything?

Have you done yours? good/bad... easy enough/right pain... how much did you use?

Manifolds are getting a bit "tired" so really not interested in any fancy (expensive) coatings smile

I did mine with the fiberglass wrap a few times before I went to the ceramic coating. The fiberglass wrap does eventually fall apart and lasts a lot longer if it's supported by stainless wire twists at regular intervals. It also smokes like crazy the first time it is heated up.

It cools the engine bay quite a lot and also muffles the exhaust note quite noticeably. In theory it should mean the exhaust carries more heat downstream but I didn't notice any problems.

No idea how much of this is relevant to that other wrap you mentioned.

ETA don't remember how much I used, but it was 2" wide tape and I used a 1" overlap - you can estimate the total length from that.

Hi

I completely agree with GreenV8S, it’s a good way to get heat out of the engine bay and move it down the chain. The thinner wraps last a few years and the thicker (industrial standard) kind of bonds and lasts until you touch them.

I used the thicker type before as I was running supercharged. This time I opted for the thinner version but more overlap = more wrap. We will have to see if it holds. If they don’t survive the blower heat, I have a full roll of the thicker version (about twice the thickness of the stuff sold by auto shops). For a normally aspirated engine there should be no problem.

The smoke is just the first few miles. Take her out on a short highway pass and that will be history. You won’t even notice it except for a little smell in the beginning. It’s just smoke and there is no risks for fire or alike involved what so ever. And oh, the less dirt, fat and stuff on the wrap from installation, the less smoke. Use gloves.

Do add lots of stainless metal wire around to secure the wrap as it gets very fragile when heated. But unless you touch/turn the wraps they will stay intact.

The blower is going back soon so it will be interesting to see how this thinner stuff holds up.

Some wrote that the glass fibre wrap accumulates moist and hence the manifolds rust more with them. My experience is the opposite. The inner part of the glass fibre will actually melt and form a more or less solid insulation between the glass fibre outer edge we can see and the manifolds. Hence moist cannot get in direct contact with the header. I have used it since the blower went in late 90’s and rust was never a problem with the headers. Heat from the blower was….

If your car is driven seldom and stored outside for long periods the reality may be different but for me I never had a problem.

-And the heat generated with the blower really was reduced under the hood. It’s still too hot (that is why it is out temporarily) but it got much better.

My 25 cents….

Kind regards

//Rob

Mike, I've got 2 rolls of 15" x 1" and 2 rolls of 15" x 2" (all titanium, or so I'm led to believe) kicking about, if you want them ?

I won't be wrapping mine again, I (think) used the fibreglass stuff and it was nothing but torture every time they had to come off!
