OK, I believe (from reading posts here) that Tiptronic 'learns' your driving style, has 250 maps, holds onto gears in cornering, etc., etc. Well mine doesn't! It always feels like I'm in the wrong gear. Its in 5th before I've even got to 30mph, it changes down (and up) whilst cornering, and just generally feels a bit crap.

Is it just me? Is it 'learning' my (obviously) crap driving, or is there a problem with it? Its driving me mad

Previous owner was obviously a big girl's blouse.

Take it to a track day (or an autobahn) and see if it "learns" then. Or alternatively, find out from Porsche if the learning can be RESET to start afresh.

tell us a bit more about the actual car /build date....my experience is of 4 speed 993 late 93 build and 5 speed 996 late 97 build ie less sophisticated software than current versions. At the end of the day it doesn't have Artificial Intelligence, the best way to get it to do what suits you is to do your own gear selection.

hi 800 , I would assume your system is at least as 'clever' as the one on my early 996. Mine certainly gets into 5th as soon as it can , and always drops back to 2nd when you come to a stop. It sometimes changes in corners. If I drive down country roads where plenty of acceleration/deceleration at short intervals takes place, it holds lower gears longer. On M-ways or typical dual carriageway cruise/crawl it will only change behaviour if I 'kick down'. You should at least get similar variation. I use mine mainly in auto mode ie Dr Jekyll...if I want to press on I will go to switch select ( Mr Hyde ) . However I tend to be serene in the 996 ever since I bought a 964RS as an additional and alternative 911 ( with the money that would otherwise have gone into upgrading to a new 996 )

Thanks Oldtimer, it would appear to be just me then. Will have that gear selector firmly to the left in that case.

Hi 800, just catching up on the forum when I came across yours.

I have to say that I agree with you entirely, mine does exactly the same (02 C2 Tip) so I just drive with it to the left and select manually.

Thanks for that. Gave it a good try again today and it still always feels like its in the wrong gear! I've driven a lot of autos and this is THE WORST . Slip it into 'manual' mode though and its SMASHING
