Feeling so frustrated, need to vent!

You know when well meaning people screw up and you can't be angry at them (or at least voice that anger) because hey, they meant well right?

So I left my phone at a hotel after a recent wedding event. I got a call from a chap who works in the bar who had it handed in - result! So we have a nice chat, I'm obviously very grateful and offering beer tokens etc

So we discuss how to get the phone back to me as I live hundreds of miles away and it's agreed he will pay up front courier costs etc and I will pay him back via paypal.

So three days go by and no phone arrives. So I put in a quick call to him and he say's "oh thought it would be with you by now I sent it Monday!?", err ok do you have the reference number for the delivery chap/parcel force whatever?

"oh right, I went to the post office and sent it first class"

WTF!! You put a £500 iPhone in a first class envelope and just stuck it in the post. Jesus wept. It was so awkward as I just had to say "ermm thank you" as he sounds thoroughly decent and well meaning but who does that?? I suspect I won't see the phone again as 4 days is well over first class delivery timescales.

arrrghh! furious

Even non-recorded deliveries now have a reference number - I'd get back in touch and ask him for it.

Do feel your frustration, no good deed etc.

It's a hotel so surely somebody is there at all times during courier working hours.

The easiest thing to do would be for you to arrange a courier collection at that address...

or don't leave your '£500' phone at a hotel bar 100's of miles away.

....and you'll still have to pay him for the postage! Even though he probably never actually sent it.

If he literally put it in an envelope and posted it you might get a card saying it's too thick / heavy so there's a surcharge to pay. Although if you live in a dodgy area you've had it.

You never know it still might turn up, the post to my house is notoriously slow for some reason.

I like to think you can judge a 'wrong un' pretty well and he just doesn't come across as that sort - posh hotel as well so not some oik.

Why would he bother calling me and saying "hey, I found your phone" if he was then just going to flog it... makes no sense really.

Is it not possible he sent it as a first class parcel via royal mail?

The post office are usually pretty clued up on what method to send something, they would normally ask what it was and i suspect it would be too heavy for a standard envelope.

What would be the significance of this?

Would that not be the correct way to send it therefore the guy has done nothing wrong?

I've sent phones, watches, etc this way with no issues and all I've done was go to the post office and send them first class.

So he can flog it before you erase / block it?

hmmm no. I think most people appreciate that valuable items should be sent via a signed for service at the very least. first class compensation is £20!!

You've probably been lucky, but if you do that through ebay or something and you're asking for someone to open a claim against you and just say the item didn't arrive.

It was in 'Lost Mode' with my wife's number displayed... does that not lock it down?

You haven't owned an iphone, have you?

There's absolutely no way an iphone battery has lasted 4 days without being charged. wink

When the guy first called me he put some charge on it and it pinged on Find My iPhone. I suspect he's powered it down to put in the post...
